Central Oregon Community College is celebrating Asian, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month this May with hula and Filipino traditional dancing, spoken word, martial arts demonstrations, a book discussion and cultural displays at all four campuses. Events are free and open to the public. 

A book group discussion of “Dust Child” by bestselling author Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai will take place remotely from 5-6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 13. The historical novel, set during the Vietnam War, centers on the Amerasian children born to American soldiers and Vietnamese women. Nguyễn is the author of 13 books and has received the PEN Oakland/Josephine Miles Literary Award and the International Book Award. Register by emailing odi@cocc.edu.

In collaboration with the Asian and Pacific Islanders Collective of Central Oregon, “Roots of Joy,” a talent and tribute show from 4-5:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 31, will feature hula and Filipino traditional dance, spoken word, a piano performance and martial arts demonstrations from Deschutes Jung’s Taekwondo and the Redmond Kendo Club. Additionally, throughout the month, COCC’s campuses — in Bend, Redmond, Prineville and Madras — with feature cultural displays and resources, along with snacks from Asian market Tomi Mart: in Bend (Coats Campus Center), Redmond (Technology Education Center), and the front lobby of the Madras and Prineville campuses.

Approximately 364 credit-seeking students for COCC’s 2025-26 academic year identified as Asian, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander.
