Access to fresh, nourishing food plays a vital role in individual health and community well-being. Across Central Oregon, many families face challenges accessing affordable, high-quality food, contributing to persistent health disparities. Around the Bend Farms is addressing this need by growing and distributing nutrient-dense, locally grown produce to individuals and families who benefit most from increased food access.
Communities with limited access to fresh food experience higher rates of chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension. “Food security is public health, ” said Kelly Moffatt, Executive Director. “By investing in local food systems, we are not only feeding people today, we are reducing preventable illness, strengthening our regional food supply, and building a healthier future for everyone.”
In addition to food production, Around the Bend Farms is committed to education and hands-on learning. The farm regularly welcomes school groups and community organizations to participate in on-farm activities focused on sustainable agriculture, environmental stewardship, and understanding where food comes from. These experiences build practical skills and deepen community connection to local food systems.
The farm also partners with local food banks by inviting staff and volunteers to help harvest the very produce distributed through their programs. This collaborative approach increases harvesting capacity while strengthening relationships between food producers and food access organizations.
In 2025, Around the Bend Farms launched the Around the Bend Gardens program to further expand community food access. Through this initiative, our Garden Coordinator designs and builds residential and commercial garden beds, empowering individuals, families, and businesses to grow their own fresh food. Participants are encouraged to donate surplus produce to local community kitchens, increasing the availability of fresh, locally grown food while fostering a culture of sharing and food stewardship. Around the Bend Farms uses sustainable farming practices and works closely with food access partners to ensure food reaches those who need it most.
