After a warm entry into the autumn season, the weather in Central Oregon is set to turn colder this weekend. As we look ahead to snow-capped peaks in the Oregon Cascades, here are three ways to prep for the coming ski season.

-On Saturday, Oct. 10, the Mt. Bachelor Sports Education Foundation puts on the Skyliners Ski Swap, featuring all the boots, skis, poles, boards and other gear needed to prep for the winter season. It’s too late to enter new gear into the swap, but it’s not too late to show up and grab some new or used gear. The Skyliners Ski Swap takes place from 8am to 5pm at The Pavilion at 1001 SW Bradbury Way in Bend.

-Backcountry lovers have the chance to geek out on all things winter weather and avalanches at the Central Oregon Avalanche Center’s Snow and Avalanche Workshop taking place Sat., November 14 at Central Oregon Community College. The event features speakers from all over the country talking about backcountry safety, risk and decision making, building a medical kit for backcountry emergencies and so much more. It’s a full day of programming that goes from 8am to 4pm at COCC’s Wille Hall. People can register and pay for the $40 workshop at coavalanche.org.

-If your legs are more accustomed to trail running or cycling after the summer season, an upcoming Ski & Ride Conditioning Class might help you properly transition. Get help developing leg strength, core stability and endurance in this coach-led program at Fortitude Fitness Training in Bend. The program starts Oct. 13 and runs through Dec. 10. Tickets and information can be found at the Ski & Ride Conditioning Class page on the Source calendar.
