Tumalo Falls at Night
During two of our workshops we shot night photos at Tumalo Falls and Smith Rock. Before going there I went out to Tumalo one night to do some scouting.
Cloaked Characters New EP Features Sounds of Pretty Lights
I’ve been chatting with local hip-hop MC and producer Jay Tablet this morning about Cloaked Characters’ (his party-friendly hip-hop duo) new EP, which features the sounds of super-popular electronic music artist Pretty Lights.
The EP, entitled Pretty Lights x Cloaked Characters, is currently in production, but JT was kind enough to share a free cut from the record today.
City Councilor Files Bancruptcy, Seeks County Seat
On the same day it was announced that Tom Greene had filed bankruptcy, the 58-year-old real estate agent turned Bend City Councilor, declared he would run for a Deschutes County Commission seat in next November’s election.
Coincidence?
“It’s not my fault that real-estate industry has been so slow,” Greene said during a phone interview. “No one out there will hire someone that’s almost 60 years old,” he added, noting that he had acquired the “public service bug.”
The move to County Commissioner would certainly be a big financial step up for Greene. The base salary for commissioners is $80,033 per year while city councilors receive $2,400 per year for their time.
Hardcore Triathlon to Debut in Bend Next Year
Do you like swimming, running and biking for insanely long distances? Well, if you said yes, you’re going to be pumped to know that the Leadman Tri Life Epic 250 is coming to Bend in September 22, 2012.
What is this, exactly? Good question.
Right On, Newport Market Sign Person
We’re not sure what this is about. But we like it.
Can we look forward to more simple life reminders from the local grocer? Hope so.
An Axle to Grind: After a decade of advocating, Bend skaters are still waiting for a new park
At thirty four, Katie Patterson is getting tired of waiting for the mainstream sports world to figure out what her and a generation of kids figured out long before ESPN launched the X Games: skateboarding is cooler than soccer.
Patterson grew up in another mountain town that's nearly synonymous with sports, the Front Range city of Colorado Springs, home of the U.S. Olympic Training Center. But when it came to skateboarding, her best option was the drainage ditch near her home where she skated with friends in her free time.
Fast forward 20 years and Patterson finds herself in another mountain town where the options for park riding are as scarce as a fresh line on a Saturday afternoon at Mt. Bachelor.
Like other Bend skateboarders, a demographic anomaly that includes tweens just taking up the sport to two-car garage parents who just can't give it up, Patterson has essentially given up on the idea of a publicly funded skatepark in Bend. It's particularly frustrating for skaters given that dozens of other Oregon cities, including towns like Madras, Redmond and Pendleton have been able to build modern parks.
Bend's Celebrity Tortoise
Yes, Bend, Oregon, home of all things weird (take that Portland!), can add celebrity tortoise to the list of its offbeat attractions and biographical footnotes along with balloon chair traveler and pregnant man.
While Herman the tortoise, as he has been christened by his owner Terry Cubero of Bend’s Reptopia, isn’t national news material, his slow-moving adventures make for a nice, kid-friendly blog.

A Look at Occupy Portland
The Occupy Portland movement has been in the national news as of late mostly due to the rash of arrests of protestors over the last few days, including some arrests early this morning at Schrunk Plaza.
The Occupy Bend phenomenon is much smaller and less contentious than what’s going on over in Portland, so it might be easy not to understand how large this movement has become in larger cities, so here’s a quick look, thanks to a Source staffer who is over in Portland today.
