Yes, Bend, Oregon, home of all things weird (take that Portland!), can add celebrity tortoise to the list of its offbeat attractions and biographical footnotes along with balloon chair traveler and pregnant man.
While Herman the tortoise, as he has been christened by his owner Terry Cubero of Bendโs Reptopia, isnโt national news material, his slow-moving adventures make for a nice, kid-friendly blog. My own kids encountered Herman this past weekend on the streets of downtown Bend and were enthralled. Mom stopped long enough to allow his biographer to snap their photo with the traveling tortoise who currently weighs about 20 pounds but will grow to about 200 when he reaches maturity. But that wonโt be anytime soon for the 12 year old African sulcata who has a life span of more than 100 years. ย Check out his ongoing adventures here.

Thanks for the publicity. Herman is actually 36 pounds, and not quite 12 years old yet. But he does get around, at least in the warmer months. Nowadays he hangs out at the shop at 1631 NE 2nd Street in Bend. Watch for him again in city parks around Bend next Spring and Summer as the weather warms up again. Meanwhile, come visit His Benevolent Royal Highness Puff the Magic Dragon, King of Reptopia. (Puff is a 4 foot 9 inch Green Iguana.)
