Rose Windows Sounds Like…

“I’m on a bus, actually,” is Pat Schowe’s response to our initial pleasantries during our phone interview. Part-time, Schowe is the drummer for Rose Windows, the new-wave, psychedelic seven-piece rock band out of Seattle. The rest of the time, he works at a holistic pet food store. “Weird, I know,” says Schowe as he bumpsโ€ฆ

FAA bans beer-delivery drones

After our recent coverage of drones, a recent article caught our eye: the FAA has banned a Wisconsin brewery from using quadcopters to deliver beer to bored-and-thirsty anglers out in ice fishing shacks. Too bad…who wouldn’t like a nice frosty one delivered to a nearby peak while skiing or directly to your tube during aโ€ฆ

Last night’s Grammy salute honoring the 50 year anniversary of Beatles debut on the Ed Sullivan show was a reminder of the staying power of the worlds greatest pop band (don’t even try to argue with me, One Direction fans). Watch highlights here. โ€œThe Beatles: The Night That Changed America โ€” A Grammy Salute,โ€ wasโ€ฆ

So Long, See You Tomorrow

Like a magic trick transforming a bouquet of flowers into a bird, the mutation of British foursome Bombay Bicycle Club from an indie rock band into an outright synth pop group might seem just as abrupt. Listen to any track from 2011โ€™s A Different Kind of Fix and then hop over to a song fromโ€ฆ

Braaarapp!!!

Much like the perception of a motorcycle gang, for snowmobilers, there is the view from the outside looking in—usually snowshoers and Nordic skiers considering the noisy machines and their riders with some sort of combination of fear, awe and derision. And then there is the vantage point from within the group—most often a kinder, gentler,โ€ฆ

One Day at a Time

MONDAY 27 Righteous internet outrage ensued today after rap duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis—both white people—took home last night’s Grammy award for ìBest Rap Album of the Year.î To his credit, Mack quickly texted fellow nominee Kendrick Lamar to tell him, ìYou got robbed. I wanted you to win. You should have. It’s weird andโ€ฆ

Letters 1/29-2/6

In reply to “Is ‘Drone’ a dirty word?” (News Features, 1/28) Astonishing mis-information leads this Feature article.  The Lockheed U-2 was and still is, very much a piloted aircraft. It’s first flights began in the mid-1950s and, though it is scheduled to be retired sometime this year, the U-2 remains in service nearly sixty yearsโ€ฆ

No Mickey Mouse Films Here

Last year, Disney won the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film with “Paperboy,” a short, visually pleasing and, not surprisingly, predictable, easy-to-like, love story. It beat out other clever entries from much smaller crews, like “Fresh Guacamole,” a quick-witted visual treat from a one-man animating team. It hardly seems fair. Again, this year, Disney hasโ€ฆ

Bratwurst Party

“See, I’m not just a pretty face!” George Clooney says in The Monuments Men. And then, because he’s George Clooney, he smiles charmingly, and because he’s George Clooney, you think, “That’s right! You aren’t just a pretty face!” Because you’re George Clooney! Still, it’s sometimes easy to forget that Clooney—in addition to being a prettyโ€ฆ

Pour Me Another!

“This is a bad place for a diet,” the top of the menu at the Pour House Grill announces. It is a fair warning, with the rest of the menu listing choices of ribs, chicken wings, piled-high burgers and other offerings of meat slathered in various rich barbecue sauces. There is a brief section forโ€ฆ

Rising to the Top

Like Minneapolis, Austin and Brooklyn, Portland ranks among our nation’s top zones for producing quality bands. (See the recent success of Blind Pilot and Typhoon for starters.) And just like artists in those cities, an inexplicable number have the talent to make it big; and yet, only some ever will. The rest are resigned toโ€ฆ

Brewing with Homies

Boneyard is one of those breweries that, despite its exceptional beer, flies under the radar. Perhaps it’s because Boneyard doesn’t bottle its beer and doesn’t have the same marquee appearances in grocery store coolers or on bottle shop shelves. Or perhaps it is because the Boneyard brewers/owners refuse to toot their own horns, instead allowingโ€ฆ

Feeling Lucky

If musical talent can be inherited, Zachary Lucky is the Canadian equivalent of Hank Williams Jr. He’s a Bobby Bare Jr., a Jeff Buckley, a Jacob Dylan, but in his case, the musical bug skipped a generation. Grandson of Canadian country music legend Smiling Johnny Lucky, who the younger Lucky claims was the first musicianโ€ฆ

Meet the Artist

All you have to do to become Etsy royalty is draw a T-rex wearing a cowboy hat. Ryan and Lucy Berkley, the husband and wife team who created this week’s cover image, found that out when they started their online shop on the DIY arts and craft site over six years ago. The Portland coupleโ€ฆ

Take Another (Dopamine) Hit

At Capacity

Starting with the Roots Festival in late September, it has not been uncommon to find Pakit Liquidators—the junkyard off 9th Street in Bend—packed with not only broken toilets, empty metal drums, cabinet doors and loose screws, but also a slew of skinny-jean-wearing, beard-clad-sardines. Which is to say: Pakit has become a hipster clown car, transformedโ€ฆ

Skiing Loves Me; Skiing Loves Me Not

They were only four years apart as the icons of two Winter Olympics, but the speedskater Eric Heiden and downhill racer Bill Johnson could not be any more different. In 1980, Heiden, covered toe to head in a gold skintight suit, dominated the speed skating track at Lake Placid. He had declared he would winโ€ฆ

Medaling in Gift Giving

Being a gold medal gift giver may not require Olympic caliber training, but it does require thought, dedication and a bit of coin.
