Beer of the Week: Sunrise OPA

Oats in a can. Yep. OPA. As in Oatmeal Pale Ale. As in made with generous quantities of oats. The Fort George Brewery beer is a mellow 5.2% session ale, that was more hoppy than I would have thought. Actually, in a blind taste test, I doubt I’d be able to tell you anything aboutโ€ฆ

Worthy

We went to the MASSIVE Worthy Brewing campus last week to see what all the flap was about. The brewery has since opened, on Feb. 4, but we put our journalist credentials to good use and went for an early beer and pizza. We got both, as well as a tour from Mr. Worthy himself.โ€ฆ

The Love Issue

God, do we loathe Valentine’s Day. All the expectations of grand gestures, all the flipping through cards and never finding the right one, all the balloons, all the candy, all the stuffed bears, all the thoughts of maybe-she-won’t-mind-if-we-skip-it-this-year, all the things covered in chocolate, all the mother-loving restaurant reservations you forget to make until justโ€ฆ

Meet the Mayor

Bend’s new mayor, who is beginning his third term as a city council member, holds a Ph.D. in physics, started a series of high-tech companies and is very interested in alternative energies. He raced motocross in the early-'70s, is passionate about superconductivity and is pretty sure he’s tested more water-heating solar panel designs than anyoneโ€ฆ

Nowhere to Turn

There is no doubting the need for organizations like Bend’s Human Dignity Coalition. Jadin Bell, a gay teenager from La Grande, died Sunday after he was taken off life support. The 15-year-old was hospitalized after he attempted to hang himself on Jan. 19. Bell was a victim of bullying. Sadly, such torture is commonplace. Butโ€ฆ

Think Outside the Pond

When it comes to the future of the man-made pond backed up behind an old hydroelectric dam in downtown, the Bend City Council stacked the deck by appointing a Mirror Pond Management Board rather than a Deschutes River Reclamation Board to guide us. The name alone suggests the inherent bias that’s now given us asโ€ฆ

The Deschutes River in Bend

The high desert of Central Oregon is a special region, blessed with abundant summer sunshine and a moderate climate. The thread that binds the fabric of this region together is an anomaly: a clean, cold-water river in an otherwise arid landscape. Born from springs high in the Cascades, the Deschutes flows through Bend as aโ€ฆ

One Day at a Time

MONDAY 28 America’s most lovable sweetheart, Chris Brown, is back in the news again, and—say it isn’t so! He and his posse allegedly jumped and attacked R&B singer/proud bisexual Frank Ocean? First Tracks

In 1973, Bob Mathews traveled west from Minnesota on his way to Mexico City when he stopped in Oregon to help his friends move from Monmouth to Bend. Then something eerily familiar happened—he started bartending, got a job at the mountain and then straight-up moved here. At that time there was a small cross-country loopโ€ฆ

An Unexpected Journey to New Zealand

When you’re talking about "Lord of the Rings" fandom, you’re talking about a very specific kind of obsession. I read The Hobbit for the first time when I was 12. I saw all the Lord of the Rings films in the theater, then again on VHS, and again on DVD in their extended editions. I’veโ€ฆ

Pro Tip

Steven Soderbergh recently announced his retirement from making feature films—and it was a bleak day for those who think “genre” is a dirty word to movie lovers. Because if Soderbergh has proven anything over the course of his 20-plus-year filmmaking career, it’s that there’s no broad concept that can’t be executed with professionalism and style:โ€ฆ

A Tale of Two Biebers

As you already know, I have a complicated relationship with Justin Bieber. About the time his mega summer jam “Baby” hit the airwaves back in 2010, I became Justin Bieber’s #1 grownup fan. (I was also in hot contention to become his #1 creepiest fan—but got beat out by some pee-hole who was later arrestedโ€ฆ

The Sound of Romance

The Venue Two-Step

By most accounts, Bend bar Liquid Lounge is not often associated with singer/songwriter shows. It’s probably better known for black light parties, grinding, DJs and the best place to wear your spandex halter top on a Saturday night. And though its name changed from Boondocks Bar & Grill early last year, the former Elks Lodgeโ€ฆ

Friday Office Party!

It’s the Source’s Love edition of the Friday Office Party! Don’t expect every song to be of the romantic nature—but each one does include the word love. The opening track “I Love It” by Icona Pop is anything but a bubbly relationship song. Instead it’s a feisty dance track, a fist-pumping break-up anthem. From thereโ€ฆ
