Don’t Send the Wrong Flowers this V-Day

Did you know many flowers represent different emotions, moods and ideas?  This Valentines Day, instead of going for the bigger bouquet, go for the flower that says what you mean.  The history of sending flowers to a loved one on Valentineโ€™s Day is linked to a young priest named Valentine during the third century inโ€ฆ

Beer in the can? Yes!

Letโ€™s face it, 12 ounce bottled beers are an antiquated pain in the ass. Who wants to be 6 miles into an overnight cross-country ski trip and have your liquid rewards shift in your pack, stabbing you in the ribs for the next two hours?! And dropping one on the groundโ€ฆgood luck avoiding the laceration.โ€ฆ

Deschutes County Sheriff Fires Deputy

Deschutes County Sheriff Shane Nelson has terminated the deputy who ran against him in the last general election. Eric Kozowski ran against Nelson in the November 2016 election, and was put on administrative leave in September 2017. According to a DCSO press release, Kozowski was terminated based on internal investigations that concluded he violated Sheriffโ€™sโ€ฆ

Roadtrip: PDX is Lit this Weekend!

Yes, the sun is shining and it’s 55 degrees in Central Oregon, but seeing as how Punxtatawny Phil just portended at least six more weeks of winter, we figured you might need a little pick me up. OK, maybe it’s just me that needs to get outta here… If you’re headed to Portland this weekend,โ€ฆ

Happy Groundhog Day!

In the wee hours of the morning (6am Punxsutawney time or 3am Central Oregon time to be exact), the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club Inner Circle began the grand procession to Gobbler’s Knob in Pennsylvania, kicking off the annual ceremony dedicated to the prediction of the beginning of Spring. I know what you’re thinking. Spring begins on theโ€ฆ

Letters to the Editor

Sno-Park Frustrations Anyone who has tried to use the Dutchman sno-park this winter has been greeted with very limited parking and recreationalists with disregard for the law. The parking at Dutchman has always been difficult, but this year it is out of control. I understand that parking is on a first come basis, but itโ€ฆ

Hazy in L.A.

All across the Northwest, breweries are falling over themselves to produce hazy, opaque-looking, juice-like ales, commonly called New England IPAs. It is the opinion of this column (your mileage may vary) that only a couple of themโ€”Great Notion Brewing in Portland and Sunriver Brewing Companyโ€”have really nailed the style yet. People are still arguing overโ€ฆ

Natural World

When people at Sisters Elementary School called me in the fall of 2005 about a bat in one of the classrooms, it reminded me of how easily bats can find summer homes in human buildings, and the excitement they often cause doing so. Thanks to horror films, bats have been given a bum rap. Truthโ€ฆ

A Cloud Over Solar Power?

Their bodies packed deep inside layers of clothes, Carhartt jackets shielding them from the wintry mix, Rob Sloan and Travis Trondle haul solar panels up a fiberglass ladder. They clip into the protective roping attached to the metal roof and carefully make their way up the pitch, the weather threatening to turn the roof intoโ€ฆ

In the first ballot measure of the year, hints of a sea change

During the 2016 presidential election, a small majority of Deschutes County voted in favor of President Donald Trump. It was fairly close, at 46.36 percent for Trump versus 43.07 percent for Hillary Clinton, and in this part of Oregon, the spread highlighted a county that continues to be divided in its political leanings. For thisโ€ฆ

Fire and Fire and Fury

I went to bed one recent night reading “Fire and the Fury,” Michael Wolff’s ribald and riveting account of the early days of the Trump regime. It quickly became clear in the book that no one involved in Trump’s campaign expected, or wanted, him to win. That was a horrible thought: Trump and his motley crewโ€ฆ

String Theory

Pardon me a very obvious analogy: There’s a lot going on in “Phantom Thread.” So much, that if you pull one delicately frayed string, it unravels 30 more passageways, showing how deftly woven the entire underlying structure is. And just like the secret messages its main character sews into the lining of his garments, thereโ€ฆ

How to get your old school high back

I’m hearing a variation of a complaint/question with increasingly frequency, in both my personal and professional life. (Kidding. I have no personal life.) “I used to get high back in high school/college, and it was great, I was giggly/creative/happy/had a great time with my friends or by myself. Then I stopped and returned to it/keptโ€ฆ

Growth and Maturity

There’s just something about a really great soul band. The lyrics… the music… everything comes together to connect with the human condition, and you can’t help but move. Monophonics brings its Bay Area soul funk jams to the Volcanic Theatre Pub this week, and if you haven’t heard them yet, do yourself a favor andโ€ฆ

Housing State of the Union

Ahead of the presidential State of the Union Address, The National Association of Realtors released its own Housing State of the Union Report. On a national level, housing prices have continued to rise. Central Oregon is experiencing the same issues as most of the country: strong demand for homesโ€”particularly starter-level homesโ€”and low inventory levels andโ€ฆ

Totally Flawsome

I’m a single 33-year-old woman. Suddenly, after years of outdoor sports, I have a dime-sized dark brown sunspot on my face. It’s not cancerous, and I’m having it lasered off. This will take a while. Though I cover it with makeup, I’m terribly self-conscious about it, and I don’t want to date till it’s removed.โ€ฆ

A conversation with artist Alejandro Salazar

Alejandro Salazarโ€”originally from coastal Colima, Mexicoโ€”is a Santa Rosa, Calif.-based artist whose work is hanging in the At Liberty arts collaborative gallery in downtown Bend this month. He’s also this week’s cover artist. The Source sat down with Salazar to talk about his work. Source Weekly: Let’s talk about the body of work hanging atโ€ฆ

Free Will Astrology: Week of Feb. 1

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): When I was in my early twenties, I smoked marijuana now and then. I liked it. It made me feel good and inspired my creativity and roused spiritual visions. But I reconsidered my use after encountering pagan magician Isaac Bonewits. He didn’t have a moral objection to cannabis use, but believedโ€ฆ

More Help for Electric Bills This Year

Pacific Power, one of Bendโ€™s largest electricity suppliers, is helping out the less fortunate this year. The utility company is doubling every dollar customers donate to the Oregon Energy Fund. Last year, Pacific Powerโ€™s donations helped 1,209 households in need throughout Oregon, including nearly 1,100 children, 450 seniors and over 400 people with disabilities. Thisโ€ฆ
