Beer of the Week: 541 American Lager

A simple beer. Sometimes plain is just fine. Hop Valley’s 541 American Lager isn’t too much of any one thingโ€”not very hoppy, not too sweet, nor overly bitter or boozy (5% ABV). So what’s the appeal? Isn’t it just a yellow fizzy beer, not unlike a $4.99 six pack of Rainier? Well, kind of. Expectโ€ฆ

Care About the River? Here’s How to Vote on Mirror Pond’s Future.

River or pond? Dredge and walk away or remove the dam and add more public green space? The Mirror Pond Steering Committee has presented the community with four options (or seven, counting the no-dam alternatives associated with the first three options) for managing the silt clogging the pond feature on the Deschutes River near downtownโ€ฆ

The Sweet Sounds of Summer

The Summer Solstice occurred June 20th at 10:04pm. At that moment the earthโ€™s semi-axis was most inclined to the sun, producing the longest day of the year. Over the centuries, this event has been celebrated in a plethora of ways that include bonfires, music, libations and dance. This weekend, savor the flavor of a midsummerโ€™sโ€ฆ

Spending to Support

When eating food can be an act of support and civil pride, heck yes, count me as an activist! All day today (Thursday) eating at several establishments around Bend earns money for Basic Right Oregon, the organization that is managing the ballot initiative for same-sex marriage (look for a more complete article in the upcomingโ€ฆ

Crater Lake’s East Rim Drive Car-Free This Weekend Only

Almost Normal Photography Yes. True story. The National Park Service announced today that this weekend only the scenic East Rim Drive at Crater Lake National Park will be closed to cars and open to cyclists, runners and walkers. The deal, which hinged on a low-snow year, was negotiated by Travel Oregon and Cycle Oregon (butโ€ฆ

Thursday, June 20: Fermentation Celebration 5-10 pm at the Old Mill District. $20 (includes silipint and drink tickets). A beer walk (wobble) through the Old Mill featuring EVERY area brewery, as well as the newโ€ฆ

Little Bites: No Fear

These days, to be competitive, eateries west of the Rocky Mountains need to appear sensitive to the yawning litany of emerging food allergies and diet preferences. Made-from-scratch foods using local ingredients doesn’t cut it anymore—for the hyper-demanding, über-conscious customers of the American West, a bakery must cater to the picky/sickly/dieting/impossibly fit patrons who require gluten-free,โ€ฆ

Heroes and Villains

Erik Larson wrote one of my—and my mom’s—favorite books of the 21st century. Written in 2003, Devil in the White City is actually about the close of the 19th century, a compelling (true) story about the creativity and civic power that was plowed into rebuilding Chicago for the 1893 World Fair after a massive fireโ€ฆ

Chefs on Parade

Oddly, with no culinary background and only enough cooking expertise to make an over-easy egg (on a good day), I’ve become a nerd for cooking shows. My Netflix and Hulu suggestions are starting to look like the Saturday afternoon scheduling lineup for the Food Network. My accounts are constantly pointing me in the direction ofโ€ฆ

Fore and Fore Play

Last Sunday was the 113th U.S. Open. For golf aficionados, it was an event not to be missed. Lefty started the day with a one- shot lead and it seemed like he would finally shake his curse (ending second five times at the event). Alas, the drama of sport reared its head, and we golfโ€ฆ

Our Picks 6/19 – 6/27

thursday 20 Fermentation Celebration BEER—A beer walk that includes samples from EVERY SINGLE CENTRAL OREGON BREWERY, as well as live music by Truck Stop Gravy and Cody Beebe and the Crooks. With 20 breweries in the area, participating in the celebration seems like the least we can do. 5-10 pm. Old Mill District, 520 Southwestโ€ฆ

Floating Toward a Solution

The long wait is over. Last week, the Mirror Pond Steering Committee rolled out seven potential solutions—much-anticipated visual representations of what could be done in regard to the silt-laden stretch of the Deschutes River as it runs past downtown Bend—and asked for public input. But don’t break out the champagne just yet. A recent meetingโ€ฆ

The Good, The Bad, and The Noisy

A home for wayward taxidermy, that’s how owner Callie Young describes the décor of The Horned Hand, a music venue/bar/vintage shop/art gallery nestled on a dirt portion of Lava Street a stone’s throw from downtown Bend. She and husband Wesley Ladd have built a reputation on the Horned Hand’s alternative decoration—walls covered in dead animalsโ€ฆ

Horned Hand memories submitted by bands, fans and Source readers

Holy smokes! SOO many great memories. There are a billion reason I love the Horn. I have made so many extraordinary friends through the Horned Hand—friends who have become best friends; some local and some from all over the country. I've seen the best shows there, some of my favorites: The Tornado Riders, The Hootenโ€ฆ

We’s a Lot Dummer Becuz of Yew

I could spin numbers all day about the value of education—and draw into that web the reasoning that a public dollar spent on education is a future dollar saved; namely, by creating a productive and self-sufficient person who doesn’t rely on municipal services—whether those are jail, welfare or hospitals—and, yes, Republicans, paying taxes. But really,โ€ฆ

Movies You Could Eat!

Minnie Driver has hovered at the edges of fame, never quite an A-lister and only rarely earning the dubious distinction of a movie star with enough power to grace the tabloid covers. She did win a few awards for a British TV series (“The Deep”) recently, but really, why even talk about recent projects? Hadโ€ฆ

One Day at a Time

MONDAY 10 Today begins with two young adults—both of whom represent America in their own special way. Our first young adult is confessed NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden who turned over thousands of classified documents to England’s The Guardian, blowing the lid off the pervasive spying on U.S. citizens that our government claims protects us fromโ€ฆ

More Human than Human

“Where’s the girl?” I’d taken my 5-year-old with me to see Monsters University—this year’s winsome prequel to Pixar’s 2001 Monsters, Inc.—and though he claimed he “liked all of it,” clearly he did not, in fact, like “all of it.” He missed the character every kid watching the first Monsters movie was supposed to identify with:โ€ฆ

Letters 6/12 – 6/20

Letters to the Editor: AT ONE END OF THE WILDLIFE The author who thinks "the ODFW thinks like it is 1870" may be correct in dating the ODFW to 1870, but the Oregon fur trade, think trapping, was in its infancy 100 years prior to 1870. The beaver hat fashion craze had long gone being replacedโ€ฆ

No Bullies Allowed

One kick to the groin, two faces smacked by serving trays, four jabs to the jaw, four beer bottles smashed over heads, an elbow to the chest and, for good measure, a punch to the gut; that’s how singer Sallie Ford handles a group of rowdy bullies in the video for “Party Kids” off herโ€ฆ

Righty-O, Old Sport!

Tennis Surprisingly, the least cost-prohibitive preppy sport is tennis. Yes, so middle-class. But really, Andre Agassi dreams can start with minimal cash outlay: a pair of running shoes, three tennis balls (which cost less than a downtown martini), and a $19.95 tennis racquet from Fred Meyer-or, better, shop locally at The Racquet Shoppe (542 NWโ€ฆ

Coming (Back) to America

The cliché is that young Americans go to Europe to find themselves. Sometimes all they do is spend Mom and Dad’s hard-earned money partying and learning how to swear in new languages. But sometimes, the trip is a journey, and the time abroad produces a changed person (see Lost Generation of the 20s). For singer/songwriterโ€ฆ

Petroglyphs and Pictographs

Experts have stated that even Native Americans in charge of cultural and anthropological affairs for their tribes are sometimes stymied as to what rock art means or even what an image represents. However, Dr. James Keyser, one of the leading experts on the rock art of the Columbia Basin, says that is not the case.โ€ฆ

I Like Big Lumps and I Cannot Lie

Thirteen years ago, Seattle band The Presidents of the United States of America (PUSA)—known for the hits “Lump” and “Peaches”—was in Bend, and it wasn't alone. The band lit up the now-defunct Club 97 with a collaborative band featuring none other than rapper Sir Mix-A-Lot (best known for his 1992 hit, “Baby Got Back”). Apparently,โ€ฆ

Apocalyp-dicks

There are many good laughs to be had in This Is the End—perhaps the first apocalypse movie centering around a Hollywood brat pack—but the best moment comes when pop star Rihanna slaps the ever-loving shit out of Arrested Development's Michael Cera. It is a slap for the ages, and so very, very gratifying. It's worthโ€ฆ

Out of Town 6/19 – 6/27

seattle through 23 Seattle International Dance Festival Kickoff for the seventh annual Seattle International Dance Festival will take place at the South Lake Union with free performances by local and international dancers, including Seattle b-boy collective Massive Monkees—a great descriptor for the dancers' apish, primal street-dance style. In addition to inviting performers from as farโ€ฆ

The Case of the Purloined Watermelons

Yesterday I walked into the office, for some unknown reason I declared it “watermelon day.” Earlier, I had purchased a watermelon and when you are the editor for a newspaper sometimes you feel like you have the power to declare things – like “this is the best movie of the year,” or “you should voteโ€ฆ
