HCD Hires New Executive Director
The Human Dignity Coalition has hired a new executive director. Melissa Adams Gianoplus, assumed that role in early May, in time to assist in the final planning stages of the organization’s largest annual event, the Bend Pride Celebration.
OSU-Cascades Collects Cash for University Effort
A major local effort is underway to collect $1 million in just over a month to show support for a four-year university in Bend. The dream of developing a four-year school in Bend is not new, but recently the state set a goal that 40 percent of Oregonians will hold at least a bachelor’s degree.
Sasquatch Festival: Day two in photos
What makes a music festival great? Getting better with age. That has certainly been true of the Sasquatch Festival year to year, but also true each year, day to day.
Sasquatch Festival: Day one in photos
Despite a little SNAFU with my camping situation, the first day of Sasquatch is turning out to be a success (Pretty Lights have yet to take the main stage). Sunshine dominated most of the day and many of the bands were bringing their “A” game today.
Tenacious D is a Maxxinista
Jack Black spotted at TJ Maxx in Bend, reports a reputable caller to the Source. Soon after, a bothersome fan insisting on a photo drove him away, reports caller.
Jackalope Grill: Opening downtown soon! Seriously!
It’s been awhile—longer than owner/chef Tim Garling would have liked. But after the usual number of setbacks and delays associated with new construction, the Jackalope Grill is close to opening its doors downtown.
Adventure Galley: “Weekend Lovers” Video
Adventure Galley, former Bend locals and crew of party- hungry hipsters, released their first music video on Friday for their song “Weekend Lovers.” Synth heavy and catchy as hell, “Weekend Lovers” is a great example of what the band does best— make fun, indie-pop music that makes everyone want to get up and dance.
Got sugar?: Bend schools should give chocolate milk the boot
Two local childrenโs advocacy groups, Good Hydration and Smart Food Initiative, recently asked the Bend-La Pine school district to remove sugar-sweetened milk and juice from the school cafeterias. They have teamed up with Dr. Stephen Archer, M.D., local obesity specialist and bariatric surgeon, and they have the support of over 100 local health professionals whoโฆ
Trapped in the 19th Century
It was a pet ownerโs nightmare. Jack Williamson of West Linn was walking on a trail along the Metolius River near the Wizard Falls fish hatchery with Kieri, his 8-year-old Wheaton terrier, when the dog was caught in a body-crushing otter trap less than two feet off the trail. Kieri survived, but suffered injuries thatโฆ
Reefer Madness
I love pot. I hate pot. I donโt care about pot. The best we can tell, thatโs the message thatโs been coming out of the U.S. Attorneyโs Office in Portland over the last six months as it wrestles with how to reconcile federal law with Oregonโs liberal medical marijuana laws. Last week, U.S. Attorney Amandaโฆ
Not Just a Number: Honoring soldiersโ sacrifice one name at a time
The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have been marked by some sobering milestones, the death of soldier number 4,000 in Iraq, 10 years of fighting in Afghanistan and the list goes on. This year, Memorial Day marks another anniversary closer to home. It will be the fifth year that community volunteers gather in Bend toโฆ
A Show of Hands: The Bend City Council on sewers, SDCs and late-night sounds
Weโre on a personal mission here at the Source, dear reader, to de-borify city government. Maybe youโve noticed our PROLIFIC TWEETING from the last few city council meetings? Maybe youโve noticed our ACTION-PACKED blogs on tsweekly.com? And we will now bring you an EXCITING new segment every other week on just what the hell theseโฆ
Our Picks for 05/23-05/30
The Two Escobars wednesday 23 Weโd never heard of narco-soccer before researching this little film, but now weโre fascinated. The term refers to the shadowy connections between drugs and sports in Columbia in the early 1990s, when Pablo Escobar ruled the Columbian drug underworld and Andres Escobar (unrelated) ruled the soccer pitch, that is, untilโฆ
Roots Rock Revival: After a brief hiatus, The Beautiful Train Wrecks are back
Lucas Alberg, front man for the The Beautiful Train Wrecks, is a renaissance man. The lanky 33-year-old Bend resident brews beer, builds hip websites and collects cool art. He also runs sub-three hour marathons, plays guitar and writes songsโgood ones. In 2007, Alberg, then in Portland, formed a roots rock band and named it Theโฆ
OFF! OFF! Vice Records
This review is a little late, which is ridiculous, considering that the self-titled โfull lengthโ from the Keith Morris-fronted OFF! clocks in at only 15 minutes.ย ย And even though they pack sixteen songs in fifteen minutes, it really shouldnโt take more than a day or two to pull a review together for this album.ย Butโฆ
Trespass Here: You should catch the next Armchair event
Thursday night I was one of forty or so folks who crammed into Tin Pan Theater to witness the first Armchair Live Storytelling Night. Like the Moth in New York City or Back Fence PDX in Portland, Armchair featured an evening of storytelling from performers who told never-before-shared, true stories without the use of propsโฆ
Patio Time At Tetherow: A golf course view with a side of sunshine
Every year about this time something stops me from my busy life and makes me pause to welcome summer and appreciate just how good we have it here in Bend. Fresh air and clean water, hot days and cool nights. Sometimes itโs that first margarita of the season that does it, or the first leapโฆ
Sacha Un-Punkโd: The Dictator proves Boratโs Cohen can deliver comedy without unwitting suckers
With The Dictator, Sacha Baron Cohen finds himself addressing a situation no entertainer wants to confront: What do you do when the shtick that was your bread-and-butter just canโt work any more? Borat was, after all, a minor masterpiece of comedic filmmaking, combining Cohenโs sensibility as anarchic, gleefully offensive social satirist with faux-documentary style inโฆ
Miss!: Battleship never gets far beyond its source material
To enjoy Battleship you first really have to think about what you’re sitting down to watch. It’s a two-and-a-half-hour summer blockbuster based on a board game that you can play while waiting for your Oolong tea at Townshendโs. There’s no back story there, no mythology that the game teases outโit’s just blindly firing missiles atโฆ
In Memoriam
Memorial Day! The official holiday for โremembering things,โ as originally created by the Hallmark Greeting Card Company back in 1965. Now, I love Memorial Day because a) it reminds me to remember to take a day off from work, and b) itโs the only holiday designed to celebrate a function of the brain. Does theโฆ

Thatโs a Wrap: Reflections on the winter season and a PPP upset
Here Comes the Sun, do do loo do The end of May brings with it the unofficial close of winter season on the Cascade Lakes Highway. Even though snow still covers much of the trails and Mount Bachelor, as the days get longer and warmer, Bendites canโt help but think ahead towards warm-weather fun. Iโveโฆ
Adios Aamco, Hello Crux
We had a chance to drop by Crux Fermentation , the new Old Mill area brewery from Paul Evers of tbd and longtime Deschutes brewmaster Larry Sidor. The brewery is shooting for an end of June opening and things are moving apace at the job site where crews are working to get the brew system,โฆ
