PICKS: Sisters Old Time Radio Show

wednesday 22 Sisters Old Time Radio Show RADIOโ€”In an Orson Wells-style radio read (hopefully less terrifying and with some more laughs), episodes of โ€œGunsmoke,โ€ โ€œRichard Diamond,โ€ and โ€œPrivate Detective,โ€ and are read live. If you donโ€™t have a reference point for those classic radio shows, Google them (we know that seems counter intuitive), and thenโ€ฆ

The Source Reviews “F(l)ag Football” on MyWindow

F(l)ag Football goes so far past its premise. There are obviously great individual stories to tellโ€”and this film does. Really interesting men, who have struggled with identity and sports, have been at the core of some of these struggles, as well as solutions. But it is also a traditional sports movieโ€”where they worry about winsโ€ฆ

VOTE for Inductees to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

For the past three years, the public has been offered the chance to vote alongside critics, historians, industry insiders and artists on the next year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees. This year’s voting is officially open and the competition is steep. This year’s candidates include Green Day, Nine Inch Nails, N.W.A, the Smiths,โ€ฆ

The Source Reviews “The Winding Stream” on MyWindow

There are usually like two types of music documentaries โ€“ the ones that are about discovery, like Searching For Sugarman that won the Academy Award a few years ago for the story about this 60s folk singer who was huge in South Africa but unknown in America, or like the really great Band Called Death,โ€ฆ

The Source Reviews “Return of the River” on MyWindow

One of the hallmarks for this yearโ€™s film festival is the number of documentaries. BendFilm Festival doesnโ€™t necessarily have a specific genre it presents; itโ€™s a grab bag. But increasingly, documentaries seem to be its calling card. There are some really strong entries this year. A couple true crime ones: murder mystery Love and Terrorโ€ฆ

The Source Reviews “Big in Japan” on MyWindow

Big in Japan. You know, it is that age-old joke with musicians: “Oh, you know, weโ€™re big in Japan.” Cheap Trick or any number of 70s/80s bands that werenโ€™t anything special in America, but had these Beatlemania like followings in Japan. There is a sort of Spinal Tapโ€™esque humor going on, but a bit moreโ€ฆ

Keep Calm, Panic is Here

Panic is the perfect example of a slow burn thriller. Act One: We meet the characters, get a good handle on their relationships and, once settled in, throw a wrench into the works, letting the gears slowly, but surly stop turning. Act Two: We see the characters reacting to the machine breaking down to theโ€ฆ

Letters 10/2-10/9

IN REPLY TO “MOVIN’ ON UP” (10/1) “Millenials don’t tend to drive single occupancy vehicles,” OSU attorney Janik argued. “They tend to use other modes.” I wonder if Mr Janik has ever stood at the roundabout at College Way and Newport Avenue when classes get out to see how many cars have more than oneโ€ฆ

Two Is the Loneliest Number

One of the quietest debates on the ballot this November concerns the so-called “top two” primary system. Measure 90 proposes to create a system similar to Washington, California and Louisiana that detaches the primaries from political parties and allows independent voters to weigh in, and then sends the top two candidates to the general election.โ€ฆ

Access Denied

In July, the U.S. Department of Justice closed its decade-long Americans with Disabilities Act case against the City of Bend, even though work to make sidewalks and crosswalks more accessible was incomplete. A letter from the DOJ to the City of Bend said “(Bend) has acceptably progressed in compliance;” essentially saying, although not complete andโ€ฆ

Source Suggests 10/8-10/16

Petunia and the Vipers Let’s start by saying Petunia is a dude. A dude that musically blends every American genre from ragtime to rockabilly. Over western ditties, Petunia yodels and croons in a sweetly ’60s country waltz. The band says they thrive on the challenge of adding Latin rhythms to a country blues tune, orโ€ฆ

BendFilm 2014: Documentaries

The field of documentary submissions to this year’s film festival is particularly strong—and surprisingly varied—from a gay football league to wholesome country music. Yet, in spite of the varied topics, there did seem to be strong theme weaving throughout; that is, many of the films are stories about unique individuals unwavering in their personalities andโ€ฆ

Out of Town 10/8-10/16

portland friday 10 Wanda Sykes With a sense of humor that is both smart and approachable, comedian Wanda Sykes has gone from a National Security Agency staffer doing standup on the weekend to one of Entertainment Weekly’s 25 funniest people and the first African-American woman and first LGBT person to host the White House Correspondents’โ€ฆ

BendFilm Festival 2014

One of the most keen charms of the BendFilm Festival is how many filmmakers travel here to attend their screenings and mingle with the crowds. It is an intimacy that brings a fourth dimension to the films. I mean, really, could you ever imagine sitting next to Steven Spielberg and watching E.T.? But stop byโ€ฆ

A Spoonful of Sugar

Overflowing with horn interludes, driving upbeat drums, and pop-punk guitar, the Mad Caddies’ music, if nothing else, can always be described as fun. In keeping with the band’s reputation, 2014’s Dirty Rice is packed with some of the cheeriest, upbeat, rock, reggae, pop jams of the band’s career. The 19-year-old fusion group worked with Fatโ€ฆ

BendFilm 2014: Narratives

I Believe in Unicorns This is both a fun and sad film. There are moments when it is just magical, as a film that has unicorn in its title should be. But it is also playful and burdensome. The story is about a young girl with a big imagination who is stuck in a tightโ€ฆ

Born in the USA

Donning white cotton V-neck t-shirts with the sleeves rolled up, slicked back high-and-tight haircuts, and strumming out old-timey spirituals with a country twist, you’d be hard pressed to find a band that better embodies its band name than The Americans—unless they renamed the band Ode to Vintage Manliness. “Where we are changes the way peopleโ€ฆ

BendFilm 2014: Shorts

A Better Path: Stewardship of the Metolius River SW: There were really some really beautiful underwater shots. How much footage—or how much time did your cameraperson need to spend underwater—to get those shots? Darek Staab (producer): We were really lucky to capture great footage in a fairly short amount of time. We basically focused on ourโ€ฆ

Film Events 10/8-10/16

Beetlejuice (1988) Fresh-faced Winona Ryder and perpetually middleaged Michael Keaton create one of the most original and unexpected Halloween treats. A tale of conjuring, humor and good-natured frights, Beetlejuice is a peculiar but fun entry from the greatest hits of the 80s. One installation of the Deschutes Public Library’s Frightful Films series at Tin Panโ€ฆ

Winner Winner, Duck Breast Dinner

For the last 12 years, Chef Travis Taylor has been working at Sunriver Resort cooking up creative, flavorful dishes utilizing seasonal ingredients. While the resort’s restaurants may not be the most high profile or recognized in Central Oregon, that changed when Taylor was invited to be a contestant in the Bite of Bend Top Chefโ€ฆ

Go Here 10/8-10/16

Created by the tumultuous relationship between molten rock and water, dozens of hot springs emerge seemingly scattershot across Oregon’s landscape, illustrating our geologic past and providing the adventuresome with a broad spectrum of relaxation opportunities. Paulina Lake Hot Springs Found in the crater of the Newberry Caldera, Paulina Lake is rife with geothermal activity. Hotโ€ฆ

Lagers on the Northern Coast

Astoria, home to overcast skies, pretty old houses and cheap Goonies memorabilia, is getting as beer-mad as Bend. The similarities in the two scenes are striking. Bend has Deschutes; Astoria has Fort George, the big kid in town, distributing amazing IPAs and stouts in cans statewide. We have a McMenamins; they have a Rogue location.โ€ฆ

SHE Climbs

What began with a kitchen blender in a suitcase en route to Rwanda has turned weaving banana fibers into feminine products enabling African women to stay at work and at school. The success of Sustainable Health Enterprises, or SHE, has provided thousands of women and girls with affordable menstrual pads by spinning banana fibers intoโ€ฆ

Young Adult Gothic Romance

In her debut young adult novel, “Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea,” April Genevieve Tucholke (pronounced two-HALL-key) weaves together a crumbling seaside estate, a handsome and mysterious stranger and a bookish young girl ready to be swept off her feet in the time-tested manner of all great gothic romances. The result is aโ€ฆ

Fools Rush In

Probably the most heated debate in Bend right now is how to manage short-term vacation rentals, like Airbnb. Should the city do more than rubberstamp permits to rent out homes? Should the city reign in the number allowed? Should there be increased fees and oversight? And, more broadly, what does all this mean about theโ€ฆ
