Officials say 27-year-old Ian Cranston shot and killed 22-year-old Barry Washington Jr. outside of The Capitol, a nightclub in downtown Bend early Sunday morning.   Washington had moved to Bend a little over a month ago from the San Francisco Bay area. A memorial was erected by family and friends on the downtown Bend sidewalk whereโ€ฆ

End of an Abstraction

There are around 22,000 veterans in Central Oregonโ€”less than 10% of the population. Nationally about 7% of the population has served in the military. Three million served during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. A slim, and decreasing fraction of United States citizens know the rigors of military life and even fewer the unique challengesโ€ฆ

This is Bike-Rack Town USA. New Efforts Might Make it a Real Bike Town.

The information is all there: Bend, along with most other American citiesโ€”is car-centric. Our streets, like those in many towns and cities around the United States, were designed to make car travel king. In Bend, some main thoroughfares lack even the most basic of pedestrian-friendly features in the way of sidewalks. While our region hasโ€ฆ

Insane in the Membrane

I shouldn’t recommend this movie to you, but I have to do it. It’s too insane not to be a part of your life. Co-writer/director James Wan has made a movie so completely bonkers that I’m not sure there’s ever been anything like it before and there certainly won’t be anyone trying to rip it off.โ€ฆ

Marinara Fit for a Don

Leave the Gun. Take the Cannoli. โ€” Pete Clemenza In “The Godfather,” by Mario Puzo, is a scene where Pete Clemenza shows Michael Corleone how to make spaghetti and meatballs. Clemenza was the smoothest character in the story, after the Godfather himself, of course, and quite possibly a better cook. That scene, especially in theโ€ฆ

Overflowing with Beer and Drink Events

Mid to late September is always a gold rush when it comes to beer. Normally the domain of many an Oktoberfest-inspired event, this year, as last year, remains an outlier in which some events are going on as scheduled; others are falling by the Delta-variant wayside. For those looking to enjoy the craft-beer bliss thatโ€ฆ

A Place for Grief

In the past year and a half, you wouldn’t be alone in wishing there was a guidebook for dealing with the loss and grief that can come with living through a global pandemic. Turns out, two locals were working on this well before the pandemic. Co-founded by an oncology and hospice-care nurse who spent yearsโ€ฆ

Jeshua Marshall Shines on his Solo Debut

There are nods to Central Oregon all throughout Jeshua Marshall’s first solo album. Whether it be his mentions of the area’s desert landscapes, the juniper trees or an entire song titled “Ochoco Hills,” there is plenty of homegrown love on the album. Even on the cover, you see Marshall playing his guitar with Smith Rockโ€ฆ

My Dog is My Child Syndrome

Note: I write this article in jest. I don’t currently have a pet because my landlord won’t allow it… but I surprised myself on a recent river multi-day when I couldn’t help adopting two river dogs and actually was joyful when they were wet and dirty parading around my raft in circles for most ofโ€ฆ

An Uptick in Returned Pets?

You may have heard recent news stories go something like this: The people who adopted all those “pandemic puppies” during the quiet days of work-from-home are now having a change of heart and bringing them back in droves. Not so much, says the local Humane Society. Pets adopted at shelters both locally and nationally doโ€ฆ

The Sheriff’s Ranch

Dogs are man’s best friend, and its oldest friend. At the close of the last ice age dogs were the only animals following us out of the caves (figuratively speaking), and into civilizations. Since those civilizations formed, first in Mesopotamia then spreading across the world, man has added more and more “friends” through the domesticationโ€ฆ

If You’re New Here: Get Your Climb on in Central Oregon This Fall

Are you new to town and looking for some vertical rock wall-ups? Jugs, crimps, lay backs, and sit starts, oh my! Central Oregonians and the Chickens Who Love Them

Whether it’s a riff off of an old-fashioned name or a themed flock named after high-end fashion brands, people tend to get funky and creative when naming their flocks of hens. In honor of the latest Central Oregon Pets issue, members of the Central Oregon Chicken Keeping group (via Facebook) share their zany tales ofโ€ฆ

When Hurry Met Sally & Plan Bae

When Hurry Met Sally I’m a guy in my 30s. I thought I’d found the love of my life. We had an incredible first few dates. We were so in sync we didn’t even need words to communicate. However, as we’ve spent more time together, things about her are really starting to bother me โ€”โ€ฆ

Free Will Astrologyโ€”Week of September 16

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): “There’s nothing wrong with reading a book you love over and over,” writes Virgo author Gail Carson Levine. Adding to that encouragement, I offer you the following authorizations: There’s nothing wrong with seeking a pleasure you love over and over; or doing a necessary task you love over and over; orโ€ฆ
