A new coffee shop officially opened June 11 in downtown Bend. Melissa Cavaccang and Liliana — who prefers to be referred to by first name only — opened Almadorada in the former Turtle Island Coffee, which closed in March.
“We wanted to carry on that value set that Turtle Island had put into play,” Cavaccang said. “A place where folks can feel like their most authentic selves and a place where the judgement doesn’t come with it. We want people to feel like when they’re walking in here, they’re walking into someone’s home.”

The QTBIPOC-owned shop offers coffee from Smith Rock Coffee Roasters, and a food and drink menu inspired by Mexican and Indigenous cultures. Specialty drinks include Caffe de Olla, a Mexican spiced coffee with cinnamon.
On the Abuelita’s Kitchen menu — a reference to the owners’ grandmothers – are Breakfast Tortas featuring breakfast ingredients, veggies or chicken, Empanadas made breakfast style or with mushroom al pastor or cheese and beans, and Pan Dulce from La Frontera in Redmond. A full menu with Chilaquiles in various flavors is coming soon.
Almadorada has several meanings for the owners. It means “golden soul” or “beloved soul,” and is a reference to the matriarchs in each of their lives.
