The news that Sen. Ron Wyden has prostate cancer reminds us of the need for all men over 50 to be screened annually for this potentially deadly disease โ€“ and for the United States to improve its health care system.

Wyden, 61, announced yesterday that the cancer was detected when he got his annual physical exam in late November. โ€œAfter reviewing all the options with multiple physicians, I decided to take a proactive approach and have surgery,โ€ which will be performed Monday at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Wyden said in a press release. โ€œThanks to routine screening, this was diagnosed very early and Iย expectย a fullย and speedyย recovery.โ€

Fortunately, prostate cancer has a high cure rate when detected early, as Wydenโ€™s apparently was. Unfortunately it often produces no symptoms until itโ€™s advanced, which is why routine screening can be a lifesaver.

โ€œIf anything is taken away from my experience, I hope it is the importance of getting routine physicals,โ€ the last paragraph of Wydenโ€™s press release says. โ€œOne in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetimes.ย  Early detection is critical to catching this disease when treatment is most effective.โ€

As a member of Congress, Wyden has first-rate health coverage subsidized by the taxpayers and has no trouble paying for an annual physical. But millions of Americans forego routine health exams because they have no health insurance and canโ€™t afford several hundred dollars out of their own pockets. This can mean failure to detect not only prostate cancer but also other diseases that can be cured or successfully managed if caught early, such as breast cancer, colorectal cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure.

Maybe some will think itโ€™s in poor taste to use Wydenโ€™s cancer diagnosis as an excuse to plug health care reform, but I donโ€™t think Wyden will mind. Best wishes for a complete and rapid recovery, senator.

  2. Hilarious! Not to Mr Wyden all my best wishes and hopes for a full recovery.
No, I am stunned that HBM would be such a supporter of the insurance racket, err industry.
There exists a rather simple solution and that is to simply make Health insurance illegal! Prices will drop to sustainable and health-care will rather suddenly be affordable… of course there will be collateral consequences.

  3. If you don’t have health insurance and get sick, the tax payers have to pay for it anyway- so go get health insurance please- search online “Wise Health Insurance” and learn how you can get insurance at discount price.

  4. Excellent article. You nailed it, Bruce. I am an RN at the hospital and I see every day the winners and losers in our current system. Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Mr. Wyden. You are good for Oregon.
