A couple of Free Thinkers.

Things move a little funkier over at KPOV (106.7FM), Bend’s
community radio station and we here at the Source should know – the
station’s headquarters are so close to our office that we could toss a
coconut and hit their building, no problem.

KPOV isn’t funky in a
bad way but rather this is meant as a compliment of the station’s super
creative core of volunteer administrators and the funkiness of their
celebratory events – the king of which is their Free Thinkers Ball.
Last year KPOV took over the Midtown Ballroom and transformed it into
what one board member described as “an out-of-the-box prom for adults.”

The
party had painted faces, several grown men and women dressed up as
fairies, complete with wings and plenty of sparkle, music from a wide
range of local musicians, some spoken word, puppets and a hell of a lot
of locally made food. All in all, it was a funky good time-and one of
the best parties of the year.

The Free Thinkers Ball returns this
year wrapped in the timely theme “Election Follies” and again is set to
raise some funds for the station. Rather than the free-form funkiness
of last year’s attire, this time around KPOV is asking that attendees
dress as their favorite, or least favorite political candidate of all
time or perhaps a certain cause they happen to champion. And whatever
you choose to wear, remember to make sure it’s comfortable to shake
your booty because KPOV has brought in local funkateers El Dante to
provide the music. If the band’s Bend Roots Revival dance-athon was any
indication, you might want to stretch those hammies before El Dante
hits the stage.

But remember, not everyone can dress as a pit bull wearing lipstick.

Free Thinkers Ball
7pm-Midnight, Thursday, October 23. Boondock’s Bar & Grill,
70 NW Greenwood Ave. $25/person, $40/couple non members; $20/person, $30/couple for DJs and KPOV members.
