The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office says a body has been recovered from Lava Island Falls southwest of Bend. Kayakers discovered the body Wednesday, Aug. 27 when they stopped at the island to take photos. That area of the Deschutes River is difficult to access and recovery took several hours.

Lava Island Falls is about two miles north of Dillon Falls, where a man has been missing since being swept over Dillon Falls while floating on an inner tube July 19. The bodies of two women, also tubing, were recovered at the bottom of those falls. Search teams had focused on the area of Dillon Falls for the missing man.

The Sheriff’s Public Information Officer Jason Carr told the Source the recovery team had to get permission from a private property owner in Deschutes River Woods to gain access to the river’s east side where the body at Lava Island was found. That area, where the river splits around the island, has powerful rapids and challenging water conditions. Carr says more information about the identity of the body will be released once the medical examiner is finished and the family is notified.
