The goal of this day of service, according to nationalservice.org, is "to empower individuals, strengthen communities, bridge barriers, create solutions to social problems, and move us closer to Dr. King's vision of a "Beloved Community.""
What better way to celebrate the legacy of man who gave so much to so many of the communities he belonged to, than to give back to your own? I'll leave you with words of inspiration from the great orator himself:
Source: 1965 sermon following "Bloody Sunday," in which civil rights protesters were beaten in Selma, Ala."A man dies when he refuses to stand up for that which is right. A man dies when he refuses to stand up for justice. A man dies when he refuses to take a stand for that which is true." — MLK, 1965
