Nathan Hovekamp to run for Oregon House District 54

Biologist, planning commission member and educator Nathan Hovekamp enters the race for Oregon State House District 54.

We just received word from Nathan Hovekamp that the local educator has tossed his hat into the ring to run for the Oregon State House of Representative's seat from Bend's District 54.

Hovekamp has served on the Bend planning commission for the past eight years and also sat on the Bend-La Pine School district board for four years.

A biology instructor at Central Oregon Community College for the past 20 years, Hovekamp will will seek the Democratic nomination in May. Should he win that, he would face incumbent Jason Conger in the general election come November 2012.

In the press release, Hovekamp said he will be focusing on "economic and educational issues" during his campaign.

"It is high time we honored and supported working people, in both private and public sectors, as we move forward to create a sustainably stronger and even more attractive community. We can also do a better job of providing excellent and accessible educational opportunities, at all levels, in collaboration with dedicated educators, employers, and busy students and families,” Hovekamp said in the statement.
