Dangerous Kate, the latest from Below Grade Brewing, is a bold Imperial Cascadian Black Ale, or black IPA that tastes much more malty than hoppy. Somewhat surprising given the insane amount hops Mr. Wise tossed into this brew, but we like it anyway.

Hell, you make a beer thatโ€™s 8.5% ABV and chances are weโ€™ll dig it. Being journalists, weโ€™re all about bang for your buck. While Dangerous Kate (so named for Wiseโ€™s daughter) lacked the creamy head we were hoping for, it didnโ€™t taste alcohol-y like so many of the high-gravity beers out there.

The taste of rich, roasted cereal grains, the overarching flavor in this dark IPA, warmed and cheered our weary bones on a recent blustery Central Oregon evening. Viva roasted malts! Viva La Kate!ย ย ย
