Iโve been working on a profile of local ska-punk-funk band Necktie Killer this week and in the process, I learned that the band is in the process of helping to build their very own ska scene here in Bend by bringing in some huge names from the genre to Mountainโs Edge Bar (formerly Timberโs South): The Toasters and The Slackers.
This is all in addition to next weekendโs show featuring Florida ska punks The Supervillains. Of course, Necktie Killer is set to open up for each of these shows.
Necktie Killer has been working with management at Mountainโs Edge to bring in some high-profile acts from the ska genre, and the slate they have so far is pretty damn impressive.
The Toasters, scheduled to play a pair of shows February 19 and 20 (at Mountainโs Edge and Timberโs East, respectively) are arguably the longest running ska band in the US, having started up in 1981, just when ska was making its way around the UK. Theyโve maintained a touring presence over the years and were huge when ska went mainstream in the late 1990s.
Then thereโs The Slackers, a New York City-based band that plays ska in a mostly traditional manner. Their album, The Question, was cemented in my CD player for much of 2001. They are scheduled to play here in Bend on March 30.
