Conventional wisdom states that winter is a less than ideal time to list a home. The logic behind this belief is that people are more inclined to visit an open house—or to drive a U-Haul full of their belongings—during the warmer, drier summer months. But a recent analysis of web traffic to Realtor.com reveals some surprising data about when interest in home buying is highest.

While there’s no Search for a New Home Sunday to correspond with the other shopping-themed holidays (Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday, etc.), and while traffic to the real estate website certainly dips on actual holidays, there does seem to be a burst of interest around this time of year.

The analysis found that while most people are too busy gorging on turkey and fixings on Thanksgiving to search for real estate, some states are less impacted by the tryptophan than others—including Oregon. And, somewhat surprisingly, Realtor.com saw particularly high traffic just after another holiday, Christmas.

“Dec. 28 was actually one of the busiest days for real estate searches in the entire year,” wrote Yuqing Pan of his analysis, “despite the fact that Dec. 24 was the single slowest.”

Another high performing winter day? New Year’s Day. Pan posits that perhaps people are using the post holiday downtime during the vacations to do some browsing. Or that, maybe, buying a new home is one some folks’ list of New Years’ resolutions.

Whatever the case may be, it’s clear that there are a handful of holiday season sweets spots for homeowners looking to make a winter sale.
