OK, Good People; it’s time. No, it’s way past time to have a serious discussion about cats, disease and wildlife. Yes, I know, we’ve been down this muddy old road before, but it isn’t just the losses of our native birds, mammals and reptiles by outdoor and feral cats that needs to be discussed and fixed, but the terrible spreading of disease from cats to people that’s happening.
Dr. George Fenwick, a Johns Hopkins-educated pathobiologist, and current president of American Bird Conservancy, recently said, “The number of domestic cats in the U.S. has tripled in the last 40 years. Both owned and un-owned cats have increased to as many as 188 million.”
“Not only do studies show that these cats are killing 2.4 billion birds and 12.3 billion mammals each year,” he continued, “they are also contaminating our beaches, parks, oceans, rivers, and residential areas with a dangerous parasite, Toxoplasma gondii, that will remain viable for long periods of time. Hundreds of millions of infectious eggs may be deposited in these areas by a single infected cat.”
The link among cats, T. gondii, and humans is documented in many studies. According to one such study, up to 74 percent of cats in the United States will become infected with T. gondii during their lifetime. Research from scientists at the Stanley Medical Research Institute and Johns Hopkins University, stated “Because cats are now so ubiquitous in the environment, one may become infected [with T. gondii] by neighboring cats which defecate in one’s garden or play area, or by playing in public areas such as parks or school grounds.”
While a T. gondii infection may not show symptoms, medical professionals state, dormant cysts in the human brain or elsewhere may still cause lasting effects, while infections are potentially fatal to people with a dysfunctional immune system that can cause spontaneous miscarriage in pregnant women or birth defects. Some preliminary studies also suggest that chronic infection T. gondi may be linked to schizophrenia or suicidal behavior.
These are heavy duty health hazards, as the connection with cats—the sole, definitive host of this parasite—is unquestionable. The Old Wives Tales regarding pregnant women staying away from cats actually has validity when researchers found that almost 80 percent of mothers of congenitally infected children contracted their infections as a result of environmental contamination from cat feces.
“Our civic leaders are either ignoring or embracing practices that foster burgeoning populations of feral cats,” Fenwick said, recently. “The consequences will be felt for decades, if not longer, by both the suffering cats and people. Those officials continue to accept the emotionally laden arguments of cat advocates, suggesting that feral cats pose no harm to the environment or to their communities—in contrast to a mountain of peer-reviewed science saying just the opposite.”
And adding to that mountain of science are the Center for Disease Control, the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, and now the Wildlife Society, all of which are calling for action on the issues associated with exploding feral cat populations in the US.
Which leads us to Trap Neuter and Release, commonly known as TNR, touted by many cat managers as a humane solution to problems posed by feral cats. Promoters claim it will reduce cat populations, but science tells us that TNR puts wildlife in peril while failing to bring cat populations under control or address related health concerns.
TNR advocates describe cats as territorial animals that stay in their home range and keep new cats out. Not so, says the Wildlife Society, which has looked at TNR long and hard. In fact, resident cats do not keep newcomers from feeding or joining the colony, and enough cats are dumped illegally or attracted to the food supply at TNR colonies to outweigh losses due to death or adoption.
A study on Catalina Island, Calif., monitored the movements of sterilized and intact cats from managed colonies, found no difference in range sizes of the two groups. Cats still moved away from the feeding stations into the more rugged adjacent lands, decreasing the feasibility of trapping all animals and increasing their ecological impact, making a living off the indigenous wildlife.
It also appears that the majority of TNR cats are not vaccinated, creating a major public health concern. The actions of Maddie’s Fund, a pet rescue organization—which paid members of the California Association of Veterinary Medicine to neuter or spay feral cats—but did not require them to vaccinate or otherwise treat the cats. Ultimately, over 90,000 cats were released without rabies vaccinations.
Managed cat colonies are often claimed to be the cheapest form of control for areas with feral cats. In Akron, Ohio, nearly 2,500 cats were trapped from public parks. Of these, approximately 500 were adopted while the remaining 2,000 feral, diseased, or injured cats were euthanized. The entire project cost less than $27,000.
At the costs paid by Maddie’s Fund in California ($50/neuter, $70/spay), sterilizing just 500 cats would cost approximately $30,000, in addition to the costs of trapping, euthanasia for the sick or injured, and subsequent feeding of all the rest.
Wildlife professionals and managers can and should address all legitimate threats to wildlife—epidemiologists should be looking at the diseases feral cats spread, especially to household outdoor cats. TNR does not live up to the many promises its proponents make: it has been shown to fail at decreasing feral cat populations, protecting native wildlife, addressing public health concerns, controlling pests, and reducing costs. Clearly, this misguided management tool should be uniformly rejected.
So, what is the answer to managing the expanding population of feral cats, and the cat-owners who have their heads in the ground? Registering all cats, and if it doesn’t have a tag, it is humanely euthanized.

I also learned that TNR cat-hoarders practice a form of “TNR-On-A-Budget” (my name for it). TNR cat-hoarders who want to keep feeding their cats but can’t afford all that tedious mucking-about and getting them sterilized or vaccinated just trap the cats and clip the cats’ ears themselves. Then release them again right after clipping their ears. Doing their best to hide all evidence of where they keep these colonies and telling few about them. This way the cat if trapped again just gets released right there so the cat-hoarder can continue to dote-over and feed their unsterilized and unvaccinated cats. Plus everyone else who might happen on their secret cat-hoarding locations thinks those cats are sterilized and vaccinated so they have fewer concerns about them still over-breeding or spreading deadly diseases. The TNR cat-hoarder feeder just tells them, “Oh, don’t worry. See that clipped ear? They are sterilized and vaccinated. Perfectly fine and legal!”
Thanks to these “TNR-On-A-Budget” psychotics, clipped-eared cats must be trapped and euthanized or destroyed on-site — the only affordable and sane solution for everyone.

The incubation period for rabies is, on average, from 21 to 240 days, sometimes up to 11 months, one rare case being 6 years. A vetted cat can STILL transmit rabies many months later (during the last 2 weeks before it dies of rabies, sometimes not even showing any symptoms up to the point of its death) if it was harvested from unknown rabies-exposure conditions with an unknown vaccination history. May one of those cats you adopt-out have rabies too. Is your liability insurance in excess of $10M? Either quarantine them for 6 or more months in a government-supervised double-walled enclosure system at your OWN expense (as required by national and international law), or euthanize them. Then there’s cats’ most insidious disease of all, their Toxoplasma gondii parasite that cats spread through their feces into all other animals. This is how humans get it in their dinner-meats, cats roaming around stockyards and farms (herbivores can contract this parasite in no other way). This is why cats are routinely destroyed around gestating livestock or important wildlife by shooting or drowning them. So those animals won’t suffer from the same things that can happen to the unborn fetus of any pregnant woman. (Miscarriages, still-births, hydrocephaly, and microcephaly.) It can make you blind or even kill you at any time during your life once you’ve been infected. It becomes a permanent lifetime parasite in your mind, killing you when your immune system becomes compromised by disease or chemo and immunosuppressive therapies. It can last over a year in any soils or waters and not even washing your hands or garden vegetables in bleach will destroy the oocysts. Contrary to cat-lickers’ self-deceptive myths, a cat can become reinfected many times during its life and spread millions of oocysts each time. It’s now linked to the cause of autism, schizophrenia, memory-loss, and brain cancers; as well as increasing the suicide rate in women almost 2-fold even though they’ve never suffered from any mental or emotional health issues previously. Cats attract rodents to your home with their whole slew of diseases (like The Plague from rats and fleas, many people have died from cat-transmitted Plague in the USA already, it is alive and well and being spread by cats today). If you want rodents in your home keep cats outside of it to attract diseased rodents to your area. I experienced this phenomenon (as have many others), and all rodent problems disappeared after I shot and buried every last one of hundreds of cats on my lands. Much better NATIVE rodent predators returned to my lands, rather than these man-made cats that were just attracting more rodents.
Another interesting experiment. They wanted to find out if dogs could possibly transmit cat-shat Toxoplasma gondii oocysts. A dog infected with T. gondii from a source-cat cannot. That stage of the parasite’s life-cycle is 100% dependent on cat-physiology as its primary reproductive host. It is interesting to note that these Toxoplasma gondii oocysts shed by cats can even survive the hydrochloric stomach acids for the duration that they remain in a mammal’s digestive tract. And then they doubt my words when I tell them of the studies where they found that this parasite’s oocysts (seeds) can even survive washing your hands in bleach. You could wash your hands and garden vegetables in hydrochloric acid and digestive enzymes for the same duration that food remains in an animal’s digestive tract and even that won’t destroy it. Your hands would be dissolved into a digestible pulp long before you could kill the Toxoplasma gondii oocysts.
Yeah, “basic hygiene” is going to keep your kids safe from going blind sometime during their life, becoming autistic, or die if they ever require any immunosuppressive therapies during their lifetime if they had ever played in a sandbox that a neighbor’s cat has defecated in.

Someone who will save the life of a cat over yours is not to be trusted by any other human alive on this planet. Even cat-lickers can’t trust their fellow cat-lickers to save each others’ lives when it comes right down to it. Truth is, they’d even rather that their own family and friends die (if they have any) than any of their deadly disease-infested cats. Sociopaths and psychopaths, one and all, right to their very cores.
Any non-native cat that is allowed to illegally hunt our native wildlife where I live then in turn gets hunted until dead. No delays, no excuses, NO EXCEPTIONS. That’s the very best way to keep these invasive species vermin from destroying any more native wildlife or spreading any more of their 3+dozen deadly diseases to all other animals and humans. No method of trapping on earth has been able to keep-up with cats’ breeding rates or their ability to out-adapt to any trapping method used, this is why trap & kill was a failure too. Hunted to extinction is the ONLY method that works on a species like these cats. They had annihilated all the wildlife on my lands for 15 years, until on advice of the Sheriff I shot and buried every last one of hundreds of their vermin cats for them (as-is the legal right of every land-owner in all 50 states). Collared or not — for you MUST destroy ALL stray collared cats as well, they are the very source of every last feral cat. If you don’t destroy them too then you have done NOTHING to solve the feral cat problem. Guaranteed. All the cat-lickers by me told me for over a decade that all their “pet” cats were sterilized. But upon inspection during shooting and burying hundreds of them, NOT ONE of their cats was sterilized. Cat-owners are manipulative and deceptive LIARS — one and all.
Licensing and laws do nothing to curb the problem. If cats are required to be licensed then these lying, deceitful, manipulative, and conniving cat-lickers just stop putting collars on their cats; as they did by me. And they won’t even bother getting them micro-chipped, especially not that. They want absolutely nothing that can hold them legally accountable for the actions of their cats. We’re not talking about the topmost responsible citizens of the world, you know. They don’t want that responsibility of what they and their cats have done coming back on them. If they had even one iota of a sense of responsibility and respect for all other lives on this planet we wouldn’t even be having these discussions.
I found something that DOES work, works well, and works fast (relative to the years it takes trying to educate deceitful and lying cat-lickers that accomplishes ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, which you already know if you’ve tried to reason with any last one of them). Where I live cat-lickers have learned that _ALL_ cats, stray and feral, collared or not, ear-tipped or not (because TNR con-artists now just clip cats’ ears only, WITHOUT sterilizing or vaccinating them, to protect their hoarded cats from being trapped and euthanized), _ALL_ their cats are shot on sight and buried whenever found away from supervised confinement.
The ONLY thing that works is destroying any of their cats found outdoors off their property. They either learn to stop getting more cats that die under the wheels of cars or from animal attacks, or they finally learn how to be a responsible pet owner, respectful neighbor, and learn to keep their invasive species animal under confined supervision, as it should be. Win win win all around.
You can’t train a cat to stay home but I found that, in time, you CAN train a cat-owner into being a responsible pet-owner and a respectable neighbor. Most of them are so phenomenally stupid, disrespectful, and criminally irresponsible though that you have to make at least 12-15 of their cats permanently disappear before they even start to figure out what they’ve been doing wrong all during their sorry, useless, and pathetic lives. (Though the ones by me who were adopting cats from “barn cat programs” were uniquely cretinized and lobotomized. I had to shoot and bury many hundreds of their cats before they started to learn. Yes, some of them are just that pathetically stupid.)
If you live where its not legal to use firearms (areas zoned as “residential”) then check into 700-1200fps air-rifles and pointed vermin-pellets. Many of the new ones come with their own sound-suppressor designs built-in, specifically designed for shooting vermin cats in urban areas, the demand is that great. Just remember, shoot-to-kill is a perfectly legal way to rid your homes and lands of these vermin cats. Shoot-to-maim is animal cruelty, and rightly so, all hunters know this. Don’t let them parade another illegal shoot-to-maim case in the media to exploit yet another suffering cat for donations for themselves. They torture enough cats to death with their TNR programs for that and make $millions by doing so. Then there’s always the “SSS and TDSS Cat Management Programs” that are exploding in popularity worldwide. Shoot, Shovel, & Shut-Up; or Trap, Drown, Shovel, & Shut-Up. Both methods are legal on every square foot of this earth. No local ordinances were violated if it never happened.
Where cats have already learned to evade all trapping methods, then inexpensive generic acetaminophen (overseas paracetamol) pain-relievers are a more species-specific vermin poison — a method condoned by even Audubon, Smithsonian, and National Geographic today. Stray cats have been listed as “vermin” in the USA since the early 1900’s. (I learned this from a cat-licker, thanks cat-lickers!) This is why it is even legal to use any and all vermin poisons on them. For an even more species-specific vermin poison check into the toxicity of “Lilium” species of flowers too. Be certain the plant contains the word “Lilium” in the scientific-name (other plants with the word “Lily” in the common-name may be toxic to other species besides cats). Common N. American “Day Lilies” also work, they are the one exception to the rule that the name “Lilium” needs to be in the scientific name. Lilium species of flowers are 100% fatal to cats ONLY, even a bit of pollen on their fur that they lick-off will do. If they even drink a bit of water in which a bunch of Lilium flowers have been kept — that too is fatal, but totally harmless to all other species of animals (including dogs). Much safer for the environment and all other animals than the rat-poisons and antifreeze that cat-lickers have forced everyone into using on their cats. These plants when harvested and dried for year-round cat-eradication use is even better, as the unknown toxin is concentrated during the drying process (the blossoms and pollen being most toxic), and the dried plants are even more palatable to cats. An excellent mulch for anyone’s garden or a ground-up additive for any tins of food left lying around.
However, you really need to dispose of that cat safely and hygienically so that wildlife won’t die from the deadly diseases cats spread even after their death. Leaving ANY cat out in nature, alive OR dead, is no better than intentionally poisoning your native wildlife to death. I know this. I fed a shot-dead cat to some wildlife under my care, those animals and their offspring that they had while under my care then died from some disease in that cat-meat. Cats truly are complete and total wastes-of-flesh. They can’t even be used to feed wildlife safely.
I don’t see anyone dumping cats where I live anymore. They don’t even adopt more than can be kept under lock & key 24/7/52. When driving through the area I don’t see even one cat on anyone’s doorsteps anymore. I always keep an eye out to see if there are more free-roaming cats that will have to be shot. And if I’ll have to leave fish-oil trails on all the roadsides again, leading right to my IR surveillance system and laser-sighted rifle. Leaving ANY of their invasive species cats outside in my area means certain death for their cat, their cat’s further existence can be counted in hours. You’d think everyone else could learn from this simple lesson. The quickest way to solve an unwanted animal and irresponsible pet-owner problem is to let everyone know that you will quickly and humanely destroy every last one of their unwanted, uncared-for, or unsupervised animals for them. They either grow up fast or, far more plausible, dump their animals elsewhere to become someone else’s problem.
You just can’t be an enabler of criminally irresponsible spineless and heartless idiots — or they remain that way. (At least where you live, anyway.)

TNR-‘Researcher’……Research shows the individuals who talk the most in a discussion are often seen as the most intelligent. In the same way, sometimes people who would be seen as experts in a field will write lengthy diatribes, as you have, believing it gives them more credibility. Let me assure you, the length of your posts has nothing to do with their worth or truth. Both are lacking. Copying these lengthy posts all over the internet gives you the appearance, and eventually the reputation, of a crackpot. You appear to hate all free-roaming cats, the way some city dwellers ‘hate’ pigeons. Most pigeon opponents do not promote killing all pigeons, though. One wonders what has gone wrong in your life that you spew this sort of hatefulness, towards one particular type of animal and those who try to promote their responsible care?
