PICK: Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show

QUILTSโ€”Both quilts and art shows have a reputation for being occasionally stuffy and not exactly a rollicking good time. The Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show flips that script by highlighting a diverse array of original creations (more art than craft) and displaying them along the quaint downtown streets, so you donโ€™t have to sacrifice a gorgeous summer dayโ€ฆ

PICK: Horse racing!

Our advice: Always bet on a horse to place. Donโ€™t go for all the money, or for the fancy bets. So much better than Kentucky Derby or bigtime racing, this is horse racing where you can stand feet from the horses and smell the . . um, victory. First post at 7:15 pm. Crook Countyโ€ฆ

Editor’s Note: This week’s issue

With so much natural wonder and countless outdoor opportunities, it can be easy to forget that Central Oregon is also a location for heartbreak. Warm Springs Reservation is a stark reminder of that contrast; stunningly beautiful, but with nearly half of its population living in poverty and unemployment rates up to seven times those of the restโ€ฆ

Cancerโ€ฆWTF? (a fundraiser you should go to)

Activist Emi Koyama on Addressing the Roots of Youth Exploitation

Last week, I wrote about the growing awareness of the sexual exploitation of youth in Central Oregon  It’s a controversial topic that many people would rather not talk about. I wanted to get some additional perspective from Portland-based anti-violence activist Emi Koyama, who writes and speaks about the addressing the roots causes of exploitation and violence.โ€ฆ

What in the World: Google Glass, Motivation, Weed, and Earthquakes

SPIES: Add one more to the myriad ways in which Google Glass is a creepers dream. Cyber forensics experts at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell say that Glass wearers can steal your passwords by mapping the shadows left by your fingers as you enter them on your smart phone or tabletโ€”from up to about 10 feetโ€ฆ

What the World: Uncommon Sense, Radio and Rights for Women

UNCOMMON SENSE: Everyone seems to know that leaving children (and dogs) in the car on a hot day is a major no-no. And yet, 44 children died in hot cars last year. Cats, Wildlife and Disease

OK, Good People; it’s time. No, it’s way past time to have a serious discussion about cats, disease and wildlife. The Charge of the Bite Brigade

What is wonderful about Bite of Bend, which came and went like a circus train this past weekend, is that it is a preview to an entire summer worth of eating. This is not some strange festival that pops up, teases you with an idea that life could be all about Ferris wheels and whirly-jigs,โ€ฆ

IN REPLY TO “WHATCHA DOING CANDIDATE? ‘Merican Beer-B-Q

Beer’s favorite holiday is upon us. Nothing says “America” like grilled meat and pyrotechnics, especially when accompanied by good ol’ American craft beer. Rather than buying 18-packs of cheap beer, find more pleasure with the purchase of 6-packs or singles of great local brew (just like Benjamin Franklin would do). The difference between cheap andโ€ฆ

Not Just for Burgers Anymore

Vegetarians are the black sheep of the summer barbecue. At a meal where the centerpiece is typically not one, but many varieties of meat, grill masters may be stumped by those who shun the holy trinity of burgers, hot dogs, and chicken. Fighting with Demons

Several years ago, when newspapers were just announcing a “suicide epidemic” among soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, Jennifer Percy—who grew up in Central Oregon, and whose brother Benjamin Percy is also an acclaimed author (Red Moon)—began to wonder how one survives in the aftermath of such deep personal trauma, forever haunted by it. When Corporations Took Over

Three years ago, in mid-September, dozens of protestors, upset about economic inequalities, stalked out a park near Wall Street in Manhattan. Furr Trapper

There’s something very (David) Lynchian about the demeanor of Blitzen Trapper, Portland’s rollicking alt-country golden boys. That, or the other end of the spectrum, stripped-down folk constructions about murderers and heavy drinkers. In addition, the group played itsโ€ฆ

A Picnic Basket Full of Recipes

Summer is a such a paradox: Oh sure, on one side, it is time to slim down from winter layers, and sport our favorite jean cut-off shorty-shorts, not to mention trim down for our Speedos and bikinis.
