The alt-rockers that brought you “Mr. Jones” are at it again and this spring released an album of cover songs called Underwater Sunshine. The new record is 15-songs strong and features remakes of songs from Bob Dyaln, Norman Blake, The Byrds, Gram Parsons and others. Sounds fun. An energetic cover of Dylan’s “You Ain’t Going Nowhere,” is a highlight for us here at the Source. We’re hoping to hear Counting Crows vocalist Adam Duritz bust out some of the old favorites as well as Counting Crows originals like Mr. Jones and Colorblind.

Some critics have called the 30-year-old folk-pop artist one of the best songwriters of the 21st century. And they’re right. Carlile’s 2007 album, The Story, proved that she could craft moving tracks in the spirit of current singer/songwriter bad asses, Ray LaMontagne and Gillian Welch. Her 2012 release, Bear Creek, is more of the same and has been well received by fans and critics alike. Check out “That Wasn’t Me,” a stirring tune that finds a confident Carlile staring down a past lover. No stranger to Bend, the young songstress has brought smiles and tears to fans who’ve been treated shows at both LSA and the Tower. She’s obviously felt the love ‘cause she’s coming back! Take your significant other to this show.

ZZ Top

Friday Aug. 24

Every year the hipsters around the Source offices roll their eyes when the Les Schwab Amphitheater promoters announce their obligatory gray beards for the season, John Cougar Mellencamp, Michael McDonald come to mind. This year they’re going to have to roll them clear back into their heads based on the sheer majesty of the gray beards that are rolling into LSA in late August. That’s when beard extraordinaires ZZ Top make a stop in Bend.

The Texas-based power trio will be sporting their signature hirsute look when the take the stage for a performance that will span roughly 40 years of music. Expect to hear early 80s, Eliminator-era hits like “Gimme All Your Lovin,” “Sharp Dressed Man,” and of course the MTV hit “Legs.” But unlike another late summer act that you can find profiled on a preceding page, ZZ Top is not some ‘80s novelty act. These guys are bonafide rock and rollers with multi-platinum albums and spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on their resume. Frontman Billy Gibbons is also one of the most respected rock and blues guitar players of his, or any other, era. So much so that no less than Jimi Hendrix once sung his praises and backed it up with a gift of a pink 1958 stratocaster. Catch the living legends when the lay down their Southern boogie in August.
