Last week brought some great news for local artist Greg Amanti, who won the grand prize award in the New York Center for Photographic Art’s Juried show, “Water.” Amanti’s composition, “Italian Conversation,” was selected by juror and photographer Mark Sink—well known for his images of Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat and more. It’s not a surprise […]
Teafly Peterson
For the last 20 years, I have been working as an artist and an educator. Some days I am better at one than the other. The good days are when I am excellent at both simultaneously. I love those days. I teach a variety of mediums– painting, drawing, photography, writing, film making. Mostly what I teach is how to develop your voice honestly, openly and confidently. I like to ask questions. I find it is the best way to get an answer– start with a question. What I teach is how to ask the right questions and how to not be afraid of the answers.
I work professionally as an artist. If you need a bumble bee delivering your tea, I’m the gal for you! You name it, I can probably draw or design it!

For those who’ve wondered what inspires someone to tow trailers and tutus into the Nevada desert for eight days at the end of August every year for Burning Man, now is the chance to understand it. The High Desert Museum brings this unique annual event and the creative forces behind it into perspective with the […]

An Interview with Jason Graham

I checked in with him to talk about what the position meant for him. Source Weekly: Did you enjoy your time in this position? Jason Graham: YES. And then, […]
Two Grants Ask for Big Ideas
For local artists looking for opportunities to support their creative endeavors, check out these two. Bend Cultural Tourism Fund Perhaps one of the best byproducts of Bend’s tourism is the taxes that come from it—which get directly turned into art opportunities. The application for the Bend Cultural Tourism Fund, stemming from hotel/short term rental taxes […]

Creative Side Hustles
Finding a passion can sometimes lead to finding a career—if you’re lucky. It seems like the American dream: follow your bliss and the rest will follow. Lauren Stewart, who works as a prep cook at Spork, has felt that exact magic since moving to Bend from Virginia three years ago with her husband. While she […]
The Ups and Downs in Art
Often, as this time of year rolls around, I’m filled with love and gratitude for this ever-growing city. This town gets a gold star for buying local. Yet, I look back at this year and see a major deficit, and a disconnection in how we support artists. The first big resource lost this year was […]
Witness to Wartime
Art is an entryway to understanding the complexities, and sometimes the atrocities, of history. The High Desert Museum‘s current exhibition, “Witness to Wartime: The Painted Diary of Takuichi Fujii,” allows a close examination of internment camps in the U.S. through the eyes of an artist who experienced them. Born in Hiroshima, Japan, Takuichi Fujii sailed […]
Art and Craft Fairs Galore!
When it comes to shopping local, there’s nothing quite like the holiday art and craft fairs in Central Oregon. It used to be Craft-O was the only big event, and people would come in droves to get special precious items, always happening the second weekend in December at the Old Iron Works. Now, though, the […]
