Going viral on social media can be an exciting prospect for an artist. It can bring more viewers, generate sales and push social media reach to a larger fanbase. It can also blow up in your face—which is what two local artists recently found out. On Oct. 25, an Instagram account with the handle @feminist […]
Teafly Peterson
For the last 20 years, I have been working as an artist and an educator. Some days I am better at one than the other. The good days are when I am excellent at both simultaneously. I love those days. I teach a variety of mediums– painting, drawing, photography, writing, film making. Mostly what I teach is how to develop your voice honestly, openly and confidently. I like to ask questions. I find it is the best way to get an answer– start with a question. What I teach is how to ask the right questions and how to not be afraid of the answers.
I work professionally as an artist. If you need a bumble bee delivering your tea, I’m the gal for you! You name it, I can probably draw or design it!
Artist Profile: Alisa Looney
Not long ago, I took a stroll downtown to see what I could find in the way of inspiration. I stopped into Red Chair Gallery and found artist Alisa Looney‘s sweet enamel sculptures that are rich with storytelling, humor and a love and respect for nature. Looney doesn’t just work with small enamel sculptures; she […]

Local Filmmakers at BendFilm
Amy Castaño loves her phone, but she probably loves in it a way you didn’t even know was possible. Castaño’s phone is actually a box of creativity. Primarily a photographer, Castaño recently made the foray into film, with exciting results. The film “Rebel Dog,” a very short film (about 1 minute, 13 seconds in length) […]
Monica Helms: Local Artist
Growing up in the Ozarks, Monica Helms found a world of magic just outside her door. Her days were spent watching animals and marveling in the wonder that is nature. Her first education was at a Montessori school where the teacher took the students on walks every day, pointing out the natural world around them. […]
The Tour of Art
People can take so many tours in Central Oregon—tours of rivers, breweries and pub houses, tours of the marijuana industry… even tours of the most photographic spaces. But what about taking a tour of art? On one recent, terribly rainy day, I hitched a ride aboard The Bend Tour Company’s Art Tour. John Flannery co-operates […]
Donald Yatomi
Donald Yatomi has three rules dictating whether he’ll paint a subject. One, the space must be unromantic. Two, he must not have seen it on any canvas before, and three, it should carry nostalgia. The rules prove to work, as Yatomi masterfully paints worlds people know—but ones the ordinary eye may dismiss. Yatomi turns the […]
New Gallery Opens in Prineville
The doors of a new gallery opened up this past weekend in Prineville, and the community came out to celebrate. Pamela Claflin—who started Bend’s Mockingbird Gallery in 1989 and sold it in 2007—is behind the new venture. Rimrock Gallery is located on the corner of NW 3rd and Deer streets in downtown Prineville. The space […]
A Downtown Art Forage
I often hear people say, “I don’t understand art—I just know what I like.” As an arts educator, this is always my opportunity to jump in, because the truth is, knowing what you like is the point of art. It gives us language to see ourselves and the world and how we go together. This week, […]
