This week I feature two female artists in our community in my last Insta-Watch. Next year, I hope to feature Central Oregon artists in a new way throughout the year, so you can get to know your friendly local artists some more. @Domko Fine Art Dominique Kongsli Color is abundant in Dominique Kongsli’s art. It’s […]
Teafly Peterson
For the last 20 years, I have been working as an artist and an educator. Some days I am better at one than the other. The good days are when I am excellent at both simultaneously. I love those days. I teach a variety of mediums– painting, drawing, photography, writing, film making. Mostly what I teach is how to develop your voice honestly, openly and confidently. I like to ask questions. I find it is the best way to get an answer– start with a question. What I teach is how to ask the right questions and how to not be afraid of the answers.
I work professionally as an artist. If you need a bumble bee delivering your tea, I’m the gal for you! You name it, I can probably draw or design it!
Sideshow features dance, hoops, drag and more
Leia Napoli was literally born into dancing. Her mother was a belly dancer and often performed while still pregnant with Napoli, continuing to perform throughout Napoli’s childhood. It’s no surprise, then, that Napoli continues to bring dance and movement into the community through her movement-based variety show, Loophole Sideshow. Napoli trained in tribal belly dancing, […]
Michael Boonstra’s At Liberty Show
Art succeeds best when it can show you something you’ve seen before, but in a whole new way that allows you to rethink your own connection to the subject. Michael Boonstra’s show, “n o w h e r e,” now up through December at the At Liberty artists’ collective, does just that. Boonstra steps outside […]
Ways to Support Art in Central Oregon
Bend Art Center Continuing the great work started by Pat Clark, ScaleHouse and Bend Art Station, Bend Art Center provides a place for artists to gather, learn, grow and exhibit their work. The space offers a variety of workshops for beginner to advanced students and is often a place where artists find and connect with […]
Photography Show Explores the Artistry of the Darkroom
In an ever-growing world of technology that brings new mediums and tools for artists to explore, Central Oregon Community College is still displaying interest in the archival process of photography. Next week, a new exhibit of student work titled “Shake That Shadow” will open at the Pence Pinckney Gallery, showcasing the work of 12 student […]
Desert Mystic: The Paintings of John Simpkins
Some artists apply their craft to make a living. Some pay attention to their creative spirit on Sundays, in the spare room, with the good light. And then there are some artists who seemingly walk through the world with creativity and life dripping from their very essence, applying beauty to every moment of their existence. […]
Sixth Annual $20 Sale at Bright Place Gallery
Coming up this Saturday is the annual $20 art sale, where you can get an armful of art for what truly seems like a steal. Most of the art is small—not a surprise because of the low prices. However, if this year is like previous years, the art is charming, making perfect additions to small […]
Speaking to the Artist’s Heart
It may seem strange to tell you about films that played last weekend at BendFilm, but these three films speak deeply to the artist’s experience of commerce, inspiration and the changing role artists play in the world. Plus, you can still access them. “The Worlds of Ursula K. Le Guin,” a documentary from first-time filmmaker […]
Miwa Matreyek
A few years ago, on a very cold New England Sunday, my grandmother and I ventured out to a local theater to see a performance by an artist. That was all I really knew. What unfolded on the stage was part animation, part performance, and all magic by the artist Miwa Matreyek. Matreyek creates animated pieces […]
Water Tables by Pat Clark
Two exhibitions open this week, showcasing the work of Pat Clark and her reaction and response to water. It’s a subject that’s seemingly simple, yet a subject Clark’s been sitting with for a long time. Clark will showcase drawings and sketches, as well as final large mixed-media pieces that speak to her connection to water […]
