This year’s BendFilm Festival has an impressive array of films from female filmmakers, and about the female experience—giving voice to female artists in an industry where, while they are growing in numbers, the numbers are still pretty small. And it’s a nod to, and in honor of, a woman who worked diligently in this community […]
Teafly Peterson
For the last 20 years, I have been working as an artist and an educator. Some days I am better at one than the other. The good days are when I am excellent at both simultaneously. I love those days. I teach a variety of mediums– painting, drawing, photography, writing, film making. Mostly what I teach is how to develop your voice honestly, openly and confidently. I like to ask questions. I find it is the best way to get an answer– start with a question. What I teach is how to ask the right questions and how to not be afraid of the answers.
I work professionally as an artist. If you need a bumble bee delivering your tea, I’m the gal for you! You name it, I can probably draw or design it!
The Art of Burning Man
The good news: you don’t have to travel to the playa at Burning Man to finally see what everyone goes on and on about. See some of it for yourself when The High Desert Museum hosts past Burning Man Art curator Christine “LadyBee” Kristen, who will show a “visual history” of over 125 pieces of […]
Big Ink II at Bend Art Center
If you missed the first Big Ink that came through Bend Art Center last month, you get a second chance! These amazingly huge pieces, which in scale are each approximately 24 inches by 36 inches in size, are made from large woodblocks. The result is breathtaking. The collection, created in Eugene this past summer during […]
Raising up the Community with Art
When artists decide to join together to raise awareness and money for worthy causes, often the result is maximizing inspiration in a way that can build community. Two Bend artists have worked the last few years to do just this for Healing Reins Therapeutic Riding Center, an equine therapy outreach center doing great work in […]
Dennis McGregor’s Sisters Folk Fest posters run the gamut from political and silly, to art inspired by traditional themes
It’s been 18 years since Dennis McGregor painted his first Sisters Folk Festival poster. Over the years, the annual image has become a moment captured in time, honoring a town and its dedication to the arts. This year is no different. “In the beginning people said, why don’t you just do an image of an […]
Cover Artist: Darrell Driver
This weekend, Bend’s Old Mill District will see artists from around the country descend upon the banks of the river for the annual Art in the High Desert. This week’s cover artist, Darrell Driver, will be in attendance for the third year, making the trip from his home in Salt Lake City. Driver is a […]
Northwest Stone Carving Symposium
Awesome local art, found on Instagram Ryan Choate @ryan_choate When I view Ryan Choate’s work, I often think, “This guy really gets trees.” What I mean by that, is it takes someone with an intimate understanding of something to be able to showcase its beauty beyond a singular medium. Choate’s clear connection to the natural […]
Two New Shows at Bend Art Center
This month, Milly Dole is showcasing her most recent work on the Atelier 6000 featured members wall. Entitled “Muse of Creation,” the work is a series of prints exploring how we’re connected to and inspired by the natural world. Dole moved to Bend five years ago. Her love for printmaking began while in high school […]
Of Kings and Queens
I moved to Bend in the summer of 2003, the very same month an attack on a gay man outside The Grove on Bond Street shook this community, and myself, in the process. I had grown up in a very liberal part of the world—in high school, the next town over from mine was even named […]
Artwatch: Brandon Walsh
At first glance at the cover art this week, you may notice right off that the portraits of legendary country musician Willie Nelson doesn’t have the typical images you might regularly see: weed, guitars, American flag bandanas. Instead, this portrait—created by Bend artist Brandon Walsh—tells a little different story, one more personal and inspired by […]
