It could be safe to say that Jeanette Small is an artist of the world. Born in Moldova, Small and her family fled the country as asylum seekers after the collapse of the Soviet Union. By the time she was 18, she had lived in three different countries with three very different political and social […]
Teafly Peterson
For the last 20 years, I have been working as an artist and an educator. Some days I am better at one than the other. The good days are when I am excellent at both simultaneously. I love those days. I teach a variety of mediums– painting, drawing, photography, writing, film making. Mostly what I teach is how to develop your voice honestly, openly and confidently. I like to ask questions. I find it is the best way to get an answer– start with a question. What I teach is how to ask the right questions and how to not be afraid of the answers.
I work professionally as an artist. If you need a bumble bee delivering your tea, I’m the gal for you! You name it, I can probably draw or design it!
Artist Profile: Steve Stevens
Yes, his real name really is Steve Stevens. It’s not one he was born with, but rather, acquired when he was adopted at age 13. He was already Steve, but when he became Steve Stevens, things got interesting. People wanted to know him and talk to him. When I asked him how that affected him, […]
Things You Know, But Cannot Explain
The renowned artist Rick Bartow once described his process this way: “I drew myself straight.” He also said, “art is medicine.” When you put the ideas together, you start to see how Bartow was able to transform pain into something beautiful and hopeful; challenging and redemptive. It’s possibly what Bartow is best known for—making challenging […]

Dawn Wall is a Delight for Doc Lovers
Anyone who loves documentary films knows this: the subject doesn’t really matter. The heart of a great documentary transcends its subject, and “The Dawn Wall” is no exception. BendFilm is bringing this film back to The Tower Theatre on Jan. 11, and it’s free for BendFilm members. “The Dawn Wall” tells the story of Tommy […]

Jacob Norris: Painting in the Wild
It’s a testament to a community when an artist wants to stay settled in the place they began. For Jacob Norris, his painting began when he was a student at Mountain View High School and he studied with Ken Roth. That relationship proved influential for Norris, who apprenticed with Roth for several years after high […]
Alternative Ways to Give the Gift of Art
A great alternative to giving a gift is giving an experience—a way to make time for family and friends and to do something fun. One offering that can incorporate groups of friends and family: a painting class with Karen Eland. This is not a typical painting class, however. Eland only paints with either coffee or beer—and […]
