The 25thย annual Salmon Bakeย offers more than a feast. The event, held at Central Oregon Community Collegeโs athletic field, includes music, dance, vendors and a silent auction. The collegeโs Native American program and its First Nations Student Union Club are hosting the feast. Itโs a free family friendly event on Saturday, May 17 from 11am-3pm. All donations and auction proceeds go toward COCCโs First Nations Student Union scholarship program. Nearly 4% of the collegeโs students identify as American Indian or Alaska Native.
Traditionally baked salmon โ skewered on sticks, ringing an open fire โ will be served beginning at 1 p.m., with fish provided by Brigham Fishery, a Native-owned business, and prepared by Sandra Greene of Quartz Creek. Frybread and other side dishes will also be served, according to a news release.
Music will include flutist James Edmund Greeley, who lives on the Warm Springs Reservation. He plays native flutes and bone whistles. Quartz Creek will perform powwow drumming and dancing.
