Whew. Riding around looking for beers, finding beers, drinking beers…it’s exhausting. But we’re doing it for you, dear beer-enthusiasts, as part of our Bend Brewfest preview.

Trying to Steal Our Stash: Imposters in our garage
Imagine our surprise when opened our garage this morning, and found a neighborhood character happily helping himself to beer from our kegerator!
In nice weather, we typically leave the garage door up, but we had foolishly left the kegerator, which is normally kept close to our desks, in the garage. We didn’t realize we were leaving the door open to community beer fills.
The exchange went something like this:
us: “Excuse me??!!”
local (already shwilled at 10am and talking in a voice not unlike Barney, from the Simpsons): “Ohw…I’m just filling up this here growler.”
Mmmmm, Hamm’s!
Celebrate summer with Hamm’s. “Mmmm, Hamm’s!”
Theodore Hamm (hence Hamm-apostrophe-s, as in it’s “Hamm’s beer”) started the brewery in 1865 near St.
What Ales Ya?: Not making the grade as a beer lover
By Bob Woodward
The great American jazz maestro Duke Ellington once noted: “if it sounds good and you like it, it's good music.”
I feel the same way about beer. If it tastes good and I like it, it's good beer. And thankfully every one of our local craft brewers makes at least three beers each that I enjoy quaffing. Thanks to all for keeping me happy.
But recently I found out how wrong I am in simply “liking” beer. That and how out of touch I am with some local beer fanatics. Here's how it all came down.
Deschutes Brewmaster Larry Sidor is Leaving the Brewery
This very well may come as surprising news to beer fans not just in Bend but throughout much of the western United States, but Larry Sidor, Deschutes Brewery’s brewmaster for the past eight years, has announced that he’ll be leaving the brewery at the end of the year.
It’s been a lifelong dream of Sidor’s to start his own brewery and upon leaving at the end of 2011, he’ll be doing just that.
Central Oregon’s Breweries Take Home Medals at North American Beer Awards
At last weekend’s North American Beer Awards Bend’s brewing contingent made a strong showing with four of our breweries taking home medals from the annual competition that featured more than 1,000 entries.
Deschutes Brewery took home a total of four medals, including a gold medal for its Dissident which took top honors in the Flanders Brown Ale category.
Match Deschutes Brewery’s Labels With the Landmarks
I just came across this short film from Deschutes Brewery in which a couple travels through Central Oregon visiting the landmarks seen on the labels of Deschutes’ beers.
It’s a pretty interesting tour through our region and a bit of background behind the iconic labels on the brewery’s beer.
Vote For Bend as BeerCity USA 2011
OK, so we’re all aware that online polls really don’t mean much, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get fanatical about your hometown for Examiner.com’s “BeerCity USA 2011” poll.
Former Ernesto's Spot to Reopen As Pub and Brew Shop
The owners of The Brew Shop, aka the homebrew shop on Division, have signed a lease for the iconic Ernesto’s building on Third Street. Owner Tom Gilles said he and his partners signed a lease earlier this week that will allow them to open an expanded brew shop and basement pub in the Ernesto’s building by early summer, depending on how their city permitting process goes.
Gilles said the space needs some minor remodeling to suit their needs, but is largely ready to go. The building will allow the Brew Shop to add to its existing inventory, upping the shop’s supply of grains and other accessories that Bend’s growing homebrew community desires. The Brew Shop will also be bringing over its walk-in cooler and expansive collection of bottled microbrews that Bend beer lovers know is unrivaled among Central Oregon suds purveyors. Gilles said the additional space would only add to the dizzying array of ales and lagers at the Brew Shop.
Most interestingly, the new digs will allow Gilles and his partners, all of whom have retired from the Bend post office, to expand into the restaurant and pub business by reincarnating the former Ernesto’s lounge as a downstairs pub. Gilles said the partnership would likely expand the existing bar, a holdover from Ernesto’s, from six handles to something on the order of 15 beers.
Boneyard Beer Wins Bend March Madness
The ongoing head-to-head tournament at Old Mill Brew Werks pitting locals beers against each other has come to an end and it looks like Boneyard Beer has won the first-ever March Madness of beer contest.
Boneyard’s RPM IPA took the top honor, beating out all the other local breweries, including the host Old Mill Brew’s new Irreverence IPA.
