Bend Loves Drink! Horned Hand to re-open as a mead hall
It looks like Bend will soon have its own meadery. Starting Oct.
Urgent Needs for Volunteers at Masters Nationals This Week
With just a matter of hours remaining before the start of the multi-day Masters Road Nationals bike event, organizers are still well short of the roughly 400 volunteers needed to shepherd the event through the five-day campaign that begins Wednesday. Volunteer coordinator Renee Mansour said she is scrambling to find enough bodies to staff keyโฆ
FIRST LISTEN! New track from Bend singer Chris Beland
Bend Singer Chris Beland is soon to make the move back to California. But before he goes, he’s got one last album to bestow upon Central Oregon.
Bank robbery suspect nabbed in DUII stop
A routine DUII stop led to the arrest of an Oregon woman on federal bank robbery charges at the front end of the Labor Day weekend. Jennifer Collenn Langwell, 33, of Hillsboro was arrested after an OSP officer responded to a report of erratic driving.
Masters Road National Championships: Uber-fit old folks descend on Bend for bike races
For the second consecutive year hundreds of “mature” bike racers will flock to Central Oregon for the USA Cycling Masters Road National Championships. This year it’s a five-day affair that will kick off Wednesday, Sept.
Into the Badlands
We went into the Badlands the other day with some photo enthusiast to learn how to shoot at night. Since we have the moon up right now and the milky way is not visible we concentrated on using the moon as a source of light.
What Happened to Josey Wales?
Is it me, or does the High Plains Drifter look like he’s performing at the senior center talent show. More evidence that the GOP should just keep playing to their strengths, Blind Fear and Righteous Anger and leave the comedy to those who still have a sense of humor.
Little Woody and Maragas Stomp (Bacchus Loves Bend)
Itโs a classic Labor Day match up: wine versus beer, grapes versus hops, oenophile versus beer connoisseur. ย So pick your poison and head outside to celebrate summerโs end.
New Plan Will Guide Airport Development
The last few years have been turbulent (get it, turbulent) for the Bend Airport even though activity has dramatically increased since 2000. Cessna closed a large facility there in 2009 and it’s been difficult to attract new businesses, in part because of a shortage of space for midsize companies at the airport, said city officialsโฆ
Win Little Woody Passes
Weโve got a pair of passes to this weekendโs Little Woody barrel aged beer fest and whiskey tasting. Itโs the premier small batch beer event in Bend and beyond and you donโt want to miss it.
Dry Conditions Prompt Forest Restrictions
If you’re planning a camping trip for Labor Day weekend, be prepared to leave the smores at home. Deschutes forester John Allen announced a raft of restrictions that could put on a damper on weenie roasts and kumbaya around the campfire, as well as other activities that could unwittingly spark a wildfire.
Still Think Lance is Clean? Read This and You Won’t
Adrian Smith, a prominent blogger on soccer, cycling and clean sports, recently posted this amazingly damning, focused and, despite it’s 4,000 words, succinct narrative on Lance’s dirty past. It’d be a shorter post if Lance hadn’t acted like such an asshole for most of his career.

Look To Redmond for: No-Kill Blueprint
Emma Cliffordโs opinion letter in the August 16th Source (โBend Can Do Better By Its Animalsโ) struck a chord with me and many other readers of the Source magazine โ as plans for โno-killโ (or โhigh-saveโ) already do exist within pockets of our Central Oregon community. Since December 2008, the blueprint for a โno-killโ solutionโฆ
Albomโs Albatross
I see that Mitch Albom is coming to Bend in September. Heโs promoting a new book and Iโm guessing heโll spend a fair amount of time telling people how important he is. Mitch and I were in the same union (Newspaper Guild Local 22) back in 1995 when his employer, the Detroit Free Press, demandedโฆ
Smoked Out, Again
Central Oregonians like to brag about their clean air, and most of the time the bragging is justified. Last week, though, somebody driving into Bend might have thought heโd taken a wrong turn on I-5 and ended up in Los Angeles. A yellowish-brown pall hung over town, so thick at times that you could barelyโฆ
In Your Face Hump Day.
Wednesday is here and there is plenty of live music to get you over the mid-week hump. San Francisco based Tartufi plays the Horned Hand at 9pm.
Severed Roots: Century Center owner puts brakes on popular festival after issues with neighbors
If you circled the last weekend of September on your calendar and dedicated it to Bendโs homegrown music festival, you should make other plans. Bend Roots Revival has been cancelled due to issues related to traffic and development at Century Center, where the seven-year-old festival was to have taken place. โItโs unfortunate,โ said Century Centerโฆ
Our Picks for 08/29-09/06

Musicfest Northwest, Portland Oregon Sept. 5-9 Every September the heart of the Rose City buzzes for the better part of a week with psychedelic and indie rock nouveau, avant-garde electronic beats and impassioned folk music. The Middle of Everything: Mazza adds another ethnic option in Bend
It was the love of the community that brought Michel Shehadeh to Bend, but it was a passion for the food that convinced him to jettison his career in San Francisco and open a restaurant in downtown. Recently Shehadehโs Mazza Bistro joined a small but growing number of ethnic restaurants that are helping to diversifyโฆ
Let There Be Wood: Little Woody takes beer making back to its origins
Somewhat ironically, the inspiration for Bendโs barrel-aged beer festival started not with a meditation on wood, but as an homage to ironโsteel specifically, according to one of the festivalโs key developers, local brewer Pat OโShea. OโShea said it was the experience of seeing his hometown of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania trying to preserve its 20th Century steelโฆ
Oregon Olympian Nick Symmonds Does the Beer Mile
Eugene-based track star, Nick Symmonds, is one fast dude. He’s also pretty clever, as proved by his e-bay tattoo-sponsorship idea.
Holding the Edge: Lawless flirts with conventionality in its dark, anti-heroic tale.
Lawless is a portrait in anti-heroism, the real-life story of larger-than-life characters whose appeal comes from their refusal to play by the rules. Perhaps what makes it frustrating is that the only reason itโs not unequivocally awesome, is that it seems to give in to expectations. Make no mistake: Director John Hillcoat and screenwriter Nickโฆ
Hand in Red Right Hand: The bleak & desolate world of John Hillcoat & Nick Cave
The ongoing collaboration between musician/writer Nick Cave and director John Hillcoat spans 14 years. While Hillcoat has made a lot of short films and music videos (including The Bad Seedsโ โBabe Iโm on Fireโ) his features mostly rely on Caveโs soundtracks and screenwriting. Hillcoat likes humans caked in dirt and bloody sacrificial filmmaking while Caveโฆ

Fly Time: Relying on the kindness of a stranger
Hiking up the trail along the east fork of the Lostine River into the Eagle Cap wilderness in the Wallowas is one of the most perfect fly fishing pools imaginable. Enough off the trail that you might miss it, the pool comes at the base of a short rocky drop in the river. After theโฆ
