Pepper Poppers Perfect for Fall Get-Togethers

Even though the daytime high temps have been in the 70s and 80s lately, the calendar tells us itโ€™s fall and all the usual autumn activities are happening around us. Football is one of those activities and this American pastime brings us together for tailgating events, Sunday brunches and Saturday afternoon viewing parties. These poppersโ€ฆ

New Rules for Short Term Rentals

New short-term rentals canโ€™t be within 500 feet of another STR under an ordinance the Bend City Council voted unanimously in favor of at its regular meeting on Oct. 5. In March City councilors directed staff to look at changes in the development code that could increase the availability of long-tern rentals. The last timeโ€ฆ

Gung Ho for Tyler Rich and Kylie Morgan

Living in Central Oregon, many folk and country singers make their way through venues in the area. Tyler Rich and Kylie Morgan put a pop spin on traditional country music and are bringing a little something different to the weekend entertainment lineup. Bringing love songs and groovy country tunes, the โ€œThinking Weโ€™re In Loveโ€ tourโ€ฆ

Letters to the Editor October 6, 2022

Worrell Park Worrell Park provides respite for nearby workers in the middle of the city.  It is unique in Bend a pocket park where wildlife, insects and more can find a home. I find it ironic that the City of Bend is trying to reduce parking and car trips through various code changes related toโ€ฆ

Taco Twofer: Who Needs an Excuse to Eat Tacos?

In my opinion, no one even needs an excuse like “I’m hungry” to eat a tacoโ€”or maybe even two or four. But this recent Oct. 4 was supposedly National Taco Day, and for that, I’d eat at least six, depending on how you’re counting. On that anticlimactic national-holiday-day, I stopped by two longtime Bend taqueriasโ€ฆ

Fresh Hop Beers Are Now Easy to Pick Up, Hard to Pin Down

Mercurial. That may be the most defining aspect of fresh hop beers that are not one specific beer or flavor but are a shapeshifting target. When a beer features fresh (aka “wet”) hops (as opposed to the kiln-dried, typically pelletized hops all breweries rely on year-round) it isn’t defined by its brewery or style butโ€ฆ

The First Tribally Owned Museum in the West Nears 30

Thirty years ago the Museum at Warm Springs became the first tribally run museum in the Western states. Its permanent exhibit dives into pre-colonial, Euro-American contact and the modern era of the three distinct peoples that now reside at the Warm Springs reservation, including the Wasco, Warm Springs and Paiute people. All three of theseโ€ฆ

AWAKENING YOUR INNER HERO: Hate is Poison

Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness… ~Martin Luther King Jr. Once upon a time, way, way, way back before Cheerios and McDonalds, there was no hate in the world. … Thatโ€ฆ

Bend Food Project Hits Major Milestone

Locals may have a sturdy green bag or two hanging around their pantries, waiting to be filled with foods for people in need. In 2015, those green bags began to circulate around Bend, destined for collection by volunteers with the Bend Food Project. The nonprofit gives the bags out, collect themโ€”ideally full of non-perishable foodsโ€”againโ€ฆ

Owner Pete Wojda said he’s reopening the restaurant as of Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 4pm. Little Pizza Paradise is open Tuesday through Saturday from 4 to 8pm. Little Pizza Paradise 63455 N.โ€ฆ

Horoscope Week Of October 6, 2022

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): When he was young, Libran poet W. S. Merwin had a teacher who advised him, “Don’t lose your arrogance yet. You can do that when you’re older. Lose it too soon, and you may merely replace it with vanity.” I think that counsel is wise for you to meditate on rightโ€ฆ

Natural World Treasures

Last week we printed an obituary written by the family of Jim Anderson, who passed Sept. 22 after a long life filled with caring about the natural worldโ€”and writing about it, too. While Anderson’s absence will be felt far beyond the pages of this newspaper, where he regularly penned columns for “Natural World,” it isโ€ฆ

Wyden Touts Tax Credits

Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden toured the Azimuth 315 apartment complex on Bend’s west side on Sept. 30 to advocate for low-income housing tax credits and clean energy tax credits โ€” which reduces the amount owed in federal income taxes โ€” to provide affordable housing. The median Bend home costs over $700,000, which is about $200,000โ€ฆ

Save Arnold Sues Arnold

A group of property owners and Arnold Irrigation District patrons are suing their irrigation district and the Natural Resources Conservation Service in an attempt to block a planned piping of a 12-mile canal. Save Arnold Canal, made up of Arnold patrons, started organizing after a draft environmental assessment of the piping project was released in Juneโ€ฆ

Vote Morgan Schmidt for Deschutes County Board of Commissioners Pos. 3

In the race for position 3 on the Deschutes County Board of Commissioners, it’s time for a change. While we admire Patti Adair for advocating for Worrell Park and her work supporting Veteran’s Village and the expansion of service hours for the Deschutes County Stabilization Center, we simply find Morgan Schmidt more prepared, more polishedโ€ฆ

Vote Brian Lepore for Oregon House District 55

When we interviewed Brian Lepore, we discovered a pragmatic, educated farmer and family man with a Ph.D. in soils science who cares deeply about his district and who’s running because he feels rural Oregonians have been left behind. Something of a Renaissance man, he espouses progressive values, while also having the “dirt under his fingernails”โ€ฆ

Making the Moments Count

Between working for BendFilm, Tin Pan Theater and the Source Weekly, I haven’t been able to go to the BendFilm Festival just as a spectator in several years. I’m either working at one of the venues, writing about the movies or, if I’m really lucky, interviewing the filmmakers as they roll through Bend. This yearโ€ฆ

Horse Feathers Returns To Bend

The beautiful and striking arrangements of Horse Feathers will hit home for a lot of Pacific Northwesterners, especially if you were living around Portland in the late 2000s. The musical project of Justin Ringle has changed members a few times over the years, but violinist Nathan Crockett has been with Ringle since almost the veryโ€ฆ

Real Estate Trends

What a strange time the last few years have been in real estate. It seems like whiplash: a few months ago the real estate market was booming, and now as interest rates have increased, the market has slowed from the warp speed it was for most of the last two years. Gone are the daysโ€ฆ
