Baez Stands On Her Own

RE: your un-bylined "On Stage" feature, The Source Weekly, 8/13/2009, p. 23

The writer says that Joan Baez "still holds the title of the 'female Bob Dylan.'" Being charitable, I reckon the author thoughtlessly meant the designation to be a compliment. Nevertheless, the comparison smacks of an all-too-familiar gender insult. It reminds me of saying that Justice Sonia Sotomayor is an experienced, qualified Hispanic jurist. Reducing Joan Baez to Bob Dylan is especially ironic in a piece with the tagline: "And that, friends, concludes this week's lesson in music [his-story]."

My byline was unintentionally omitted from that article. I apologize if I offended you or any other reader with that comparison, but my intention (with the use of quotation marks) was to point out the ridiculousness of such a comparison. Or maybe I was suffering from a temporary bout with sexism... - Mike Bookey
