This very well may come as surprising news to beer fans not just in Bend but throughout much of the western United States, but Larry Sidor, Deschutes Brewery’s brewmaster for the past eight years, has announced that he’ll be leaving the brewery at the end of the year.
It’s been a lifelong dream of Sidor’s to start his own brewery and upon leaving at the end of 2011, he’ll be doing just that.

Spring Fling: COTA trail maintenance day again a winner
Approximately 75 people showed up Saturday morning to volunteer for the Central Oregon Trail Alliance’s annual Spring Fling trail maintenance day. And what a work day it turned out to be what with moderate temperatures and a bit of cloud cover during the four hours of work and then bright sunshine for the after party at Hutch’s Westside.

After finishing second to one of the country’s top riders, Ryan “I barely race my bike anymore” Trebon in Bend’s Cascade Chainbreaker mountain bike race and placing third behind other area paid pros, Chris Sheppard and Carl Decker at last week’s Sisters Stampede, Brig Brandt finally notched a win — a pair of them in fact.
On Sunday, the Bend-based Silverado Gallery/Sunnyside rider walked away from the lead group on the day’s first major climb to take the win at the climbing-intensive Return on the Jedi cross-country race outside Grants Pass. Brandt secured the coveted “Jedi Master” title on the weekend after posting the best time for all three events — short-track, Super D and cross-country. Precise times were hard to come by in the back woods of Merlin, Oregon, but Brandt reckons he finished the XC race in 2 hours, 29 minutes.
Build Bend’s Budget
Bend City Councilors have all but put the final touches on next year’s budget, but you can still take a stab at putting your own fiscal blueprint together with an online calculator developed by the city that lets average citizens call the shots.
The online tool is similar to one develop by an advocacy group earlier this year that looked at Oregon’s state budget.

Heeb has compiled these photographs over the last eight years for various books and magazines and will be showing his favorite images, including both portraits and landscapes, during a slideshow (accompanied by music), which begins at 8pm.

MusicFestNW Announces Lineup: Band of Horses, Iron and Wine, The Kills and more
I apologize that I’m a day late getting this out to you, but it might be due to the fact that I’ve been busy salivating over this newly released lineup for Portland’s MusicFestNW.
We mentioned this festival in the Summer Concert Guide a few weeks ago, but the lineup had yet to be set in stone.
ODE Employees Cleared in Hayes’ Contract Case
The four state employees who were suspended last year over accusations that they had steered a consulting contract to John Kitzhaber’s girlfriend, Bend resident Cylvia Hayes, have been officially reinstated.
The Department of Adminstrative services announced the four workers, all employees of the Oregon Department of Energy, will return to their jobs after an independent investigation cleared them of any wrongdoing.
