I have the perfect solution to Bend's overpopulation of geese (I call them flying rats) Shoot them, clean them, and donate them to the hungry. Geese taste pretty good and with all the homeless people we have, and people needing food from the food banks, why not? This would help solve two problems, an overabundance of geese and unsanitary goose sh*t, and lack of meat for our needy.

Local's Come Out For Cancer Research
Imagine telling someone their disease is too uncommon to invest in research for treatments and cures. Somehow, that just doesn't add up. Every life counts.
Bend-area residents who believe no cancer is too rare to care came out in full force last Saturday for the 2nd Annual Oregon Walk for a Cure. The event at La Pine State Park raised funds for a rare abdominal and digestive track cancer, Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GIST), which annual affects approximately 10,0000 adults and children nationwide.
This event was just one of many planned around the United States by the GIST Cancer Research Fund. Founded in 2001, the GIST Cancer Research Fund raises funds to support continued research to expand the development and access of important life-saving therapies for GIST patients. The non-profit organization holds annual walks, galas and cycle tours as its primary fundraising events. One hundred percent of the money raised from each event goes to research.
Let Beck Shine A Light
I try to look at your publication on a weekly basis. I can't recall reading about an avowed Communist, Van Jones, from Oakland, Calif., whom President BO tabbed as his “green” czar. It's also known that Jones signed a document holding the United States government responsible for the 9/11 attacks. Fortunately, guys like Bill O'Reilly and Glen Beck exposed this person and he has since resigned his post.
Also, because of Beck and O'Reilly, ACORN has been exposed. This was a case of a 25-year-old male posing as a pimp for his 20-year-old prostitute. They videoed four ACORN offices in which they were seeking assistance in opening a brothel and were considering importing underage girls from El Salvador to work in them. And, lo and behold, the ACORN personnel were very sympathetic to their cause and gave the prospective young business people tips on how to beat the system and the federal government.

Letter of the Week: What Do We Have To Lose On Health Care?
This week's letter comes from Elsan Zimmerly who makes a compelling case for rethinking health care, a topic that's gotten a lot of attention and not enough intelligent discussion recently. Thanks for your well written and researched letter Elsan. You can pick up your winner's prize, a bag of Strictly Organic coffee, at our office, 704 NW Georgia, anytime this week.
What do Congressional opponents of a public health care option have in common? My guess is they didn't go to kindergarten – they never learned to share. They have something they value and covet but won't share. Sounds selfish. Send them all back to kindergarten.
Okay, health care is a serious subject. What is stunning in this whole debate is that not only Congress enjoys government-subsidized health care, many of the already insured are government employees who also have the same plan as Congress. Yes, the federal government is the largest employer in the US. The largest employer by far. Total the remaining top ten employers and the feds are still #1.
Wearing a Wire: Matt Damon takes true story gold to the next level in The Informant!
Expectations are understandably high for The Informant! since Warner Brothers has spent a fortune placing pop-up ads and television spots virtually everywhere. It has been extraordinarily difficult over the last month to avoid the nerdy image of Matt Damon in the title role of Mark Whitacre.
But the finished product stands up to the scrutiny. I'd read it's like A Beautiful Mind meets The Insider. And that's not bad, of course. Director Steven Soderbergh's prodigious and excellent body of work cuts him plenty of slack. Michael Clayton, Syriana, and Oceans 11 and 13 alone would command our respect, but he's also responsible for Traffic, Erin Brockovich, and Sex, Lies, and Videotape.
Body Parts and Dialogue Chunks: Teenage girl power gore dies early in Jennifer’s Body
The first line of Jennifer's Body is, “Hell is a teenage girl.” Let me rephrase: “Hell is enduring a teenage girl/demonic possession movie written by Diablo Cody.”
The film features the same producers as Juno, but brings into the fold director Karyn Kusama (Girlfight) and it seems this group is slapping themselves on the back for how clever they think they are. Suffocating from Cody's overly wordy and relentlessly self-conscious narrative, this flick is an exercise in extreme futility. It's OK if one character talks like a wiseacre (as in Juno) but when every character has essentially the same smart-aleck voice, it rings untrue and loses its punch. Real people do not talk this way… ever.
Little Bites: In Deep At Typhoon
My dad, who still doesn't understand why anyone would want to forgo hamburgers, lives by the motto: If it's green, it's trouble; if it's fried, order double. I've been meaning to get his take on items that cross both barriers: like vegetable tempera or the crispy-friend vegetarian spring rolls my husband and I devoured with friends during a trip to Typhoon in downtown Bend.
Ryan Costello: After the Fire
In stores October 20
With a melodic depth that catches the ear, Ryan Costello remains true to his roots as a member of indie rock band, the Oaks. Costello's use of 12 different instruments creates a soulful arrangement that sounds similar to that of Sufjan Stevens, who is a clear influence on Costello's most personal album yet.
Off Target: Conservationists' opposition to hunting wolves is wrongheaded
I never thought I'd say this, but wolf recovery in the West has been the most successful program ever accomplished under the Endangered Species Act. Thanks to the efforts of the U.
