Two days of enlightening presentations for professionals, as told by some of the biggest and best brains in the web and creative marketing world. The keynote speaker and oft-quoted webmaster expert Danny Sullivan, founder and editor-in-chief of Search Engine Land, is kicking off the event on Thursday morning. Presentations, like “How to Actually Make Money on Facebook,” follow. But the presentation that could prove the most popular, “The Art of Craft Beer Marketing,” isn’t until 3:45 p.m. on Friday. Halloween ‘Cross Crusade and Cyclo De Soleil

Halloween is always crazy. Pile three days of cyclocross racing, beer drinking and bike-art appreciating on top of Halloween weekend and you get pure insanity. The cross races and bike fun get underway on Friday with a Super D race which will be followed by movies and an bike-art show at Deschutes. The popular ‘Cross Crusade races kick off Saturday morning. Around the Deschutes Brewery race course you’ll find food, beer and throngs of passionate spectators cheering on the racers, who, given the gajillion different categories, will be on course most all day Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday night you should stop in the new gear shop Crow’s Feet Commons for Velo Sprints and free pints (a fundraiser for the Bend Endurance Academy) before heading down to the ‘cross after party, Cyclo De Soleil, in the Deschutes Brewery warehouse. Whew. Races are free to watch. Cyclo De Soleil is at 8 p.m. and costs $10 (proceeds benefit the Bend Paddle Trail Alliance). See deschutesbrewery.com for a complete schedule. Celebrate Halloween with the artsy crowd! This month’s exhibits include photography by Tambi Lane and Jeff Kennedy, sculpture by Lilly Steinlich, teapots by Chad Fox and the work of Jacob Norris along with the usual open galleries, Workhouse art, drinks and delicious Sparrow Bakery treats. Local bands Wilderness and Elison’s Army provide the night’s soundtrack. A fairly tale-themed costume party will be accompanied by a Halloween photo booth to capture all of the unicorns, dragons and princesses in attendance. 5 p.m. Old Ironworks, 50 SE Scott St.
Vampire ‘O’ Orienteering in the Dark

Like Twilight? Or True Blood? What about Buffy? How about races and unfamiliar terrain in the dark? This event will combine orienteering, the cross-country sport of navigating an unfamiliar course using maps and compasses, and pop-culture’s newest blood sucking sweethearts. Read your map, plan your course of attack and walk, jog or run at your own pace on your chosen route. Look out for vampires along the route. If bitten, you must turn over all of your points and become the vampire until you can track down another unsuspecting victim. Bring your dogs and kids, compasses, flashlights, and garlic and stakes. $10 for maps bags, Tyvek punch cards and beer. 7 p.m. Meadow Picnic Area.
Battle of the Badlands Arm Wrestling Championship

That’s right—arm wrestling. If your forearms are up to the task, go over the top this weekend and you could win a bundle of cold, hard cash. Or you could just hoot and holler as the competitors strain and struggle. There are multiple weight classes, pros and amateurs, beers and snacks—perfect entertainment for a cold Sunday afternoon. Plus, this meathead-madness is for a good cause, proceeds benefit the Friends of the Oregon Badlands. See our teaser in the front of this issue for more.
