Consider Me Captured

Two Cats Kolsch is fun in a bottle

Captured by Porches is an inventive, if not odd name for a brewery—less so, however, after considering the fact that a porch is actually a pretty great place to be "captured." Porches are for lazy conversations, sunset watching and beer sipping, which is exactly how the CbP brewers spent their early years—captured on each other's porches, sampling new brews.

These days CbP cheerily operates at least three brightly painted beer buses (like a food cart, but for beer) in Portland where growlers-to-go are filled right alongside mason-jars-to-stay-and-sip. Our favorite is their bus in Southeast on 28th and SE Ankeny, located in the same spot as the double decker bus that is the Grilled Cheese Grill, as well as the falafel- slinging Wolf & Bear's, one of Portland's best food carts.

As fun as it is to pair a small-batch microbrew with a cheddar, basil pesto and ham grilled cheese on a Portland sidewalk, the seasonal Two Cats Kolsch is available at bottle shops in Bend.

It's a hazy, unfiltered, mostly organic 5.2% ABV beer that tastes more citrus than bitter. The ingredient list is short and simple and the modestly priced glass bottle ($4.99 with $1 bottle deposit at Nature's) is meant to be reusable. The stopper top actually works, too (I tested it—no leaks!). After consuming, use the bottle as a water vessel for your next trip over the pass and into the land of beer/food fun. (James Williams)
