This letter is an outcry…a complaint, if you will, to the parents of Central Oregon. I work in a retail establishment and I’ve been noticing that, ever since school let out, parents have been mistaking my job as a retail sales specialist for a babysitter. A retail store is not a place that you can take your children, set them free, and expect the staff to “watch out” for your rowdy children while you shop. We have the great fortune to live in a small community where you don’t have to worry much about some strange person approaching your child and then abducting them. Our community is growing….FAST, and all it takes is for you to look away for one minute and your child is gone and you have no one to blame but yourself. Not to mention the havoc your children create, breaking merchandise, riding up and down the elevator, making it unavailable for elderly and the injured. All I ask is that you keep your children with you when you shop. If you think that your children are annoying, and you can’t get done what you want, guess how everyone else feels! Have some respect for the people around you.

I dont think you understand. My children are gifted and creative and need to express themselves. Besides that they are absoutely adorable and my husband, therapist, life coach, maid, nanny and personal assistant all agree. Isn’t the customer always right? I guess service just isn’t what it used to be.

uh…I think Trophy Wife was being sarcastic. But Shop Girl has a point. Parenting isn’t what it used to be. Once upon a time, children were taught how to behave in public. Stores and restaurants are not playgrounds. Oh wait, I forgot…adults don’t even know how to behave in public. Abandon all hope.
