No, we don’t want to know who you think will draw the biggest audiences, put on the best gigsโ€ฆ

Well, turns out she was re-arrested while she and her U.S. citizen husband and two children were trying to leave for the United States.  While we can all beโ€ฆ

Letters 6/12-6/18

BADLANDS BADASSES Are you one of the people that go out to the Badlands Wilderness area to destroy trail signs, damage information kiosks or otherwise wreak havoc? If so, you are doing more damage than you realize; not only wasting a lot of good work volunteers and dedicated BLM staff have contributed, but you areโ€ฆ

Stop It!

Three days after a school shooting in Newton, Conn., a grim-faced President Obama presented a national address, during which his mood wavered between sad and angry. Twenty children and six adults had been shot dead by a deranged man. And that shooting came at the end of a year when there already had been sevenโ€ฆ

I’ve Never. . . Worked Out With the Navy SEALs

The first time I played the popular drinking game “I’ve Never,” I was a high school sophomore, and instead of taking shots, we kept score with sugar packets at the local Shari’s. The game appealed to me for two reasons: 1) I got to learn other people’s secrets, and 2) I almost always “won” becauseโ€ฆ

Brain Man No Die

When asked about the content of Brainman No Die, Morgan P. Salvo (aka, Wayne Newcome) tells me: “It’s a horror/slasher/comedy paying homage to the Grade-B driven horror flicks and all the Grade-Z exploitation films of the ’60s and ’70s. It’s basically a twist on the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde story with the romance ofโ€ฆ

Go Here! 6/19-6/26

Go Here! It is probably easier to find a view of the Cascade Mountains than trip over your own feet. But finding a full panoramic view—360 degrees and spinning—is one of the most rewarding finds in Central Oregon. What better way to welcome summer than taking in the whole range after hiking or biking upโ€ฆ

Let’s Do it Again

Hollywood is littered with the decaying carcasses of failed sequels. But 22 Jump Street—the follow-up to the implausibly funny 21 Jump Street starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum—not only overcomes “the curse of the sequel,” it laughs in the curse’s face, shoves it down the stairs, and laughs some more. Then it feels bad aboutโ€ฆ

Jazz Hands? Or SAD HANDS?

Like television shows, young adult fiction, and the cherished toys of our childhoods, no popular Broadway musical is currently safe from film adaptation. Hey, no complaints from this repressed musical theater nerd over here; I love all of them. Even the ones that aren’t as good as they should be. Segue to: Jersey Boys. Jerseyโ€ฆ

22 Bottles of Beer on the Wall

In three years, as many restaurants have occupied the familiar space along the back stretch of SW Century. Two years, Players, a longtime dark and dingy bar, closed its doors. A Top Ten Book About Oregon

“The Sisters Brothers” is as much as a historical fiction as Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained is an examination of the slave trade—which is to say, the book is an unvarnished and macabre take on that space between civilized and uncivilized lives in a specific period of American upheaval. One that is as much about itsโ€ฆ

Local “Bud”

The most common misconception among non-beer drinkers is that lighter beers taste less “like beer.” This is good for Bud Light, but not for the people drinking it. Often, these folk only have beer socially and try to minimize the impact of drinking something they don’t like. The problem with this approach is that beerโ€ฆ

Australian-American and Fiction-Journalism

Geraldine Brooks, who joins the OSU-Cascades Camps Low Residency in Creative Writing MFA faculty this summer, is a Pulitzer Prize winner for fiction, but that genre really is too confining. All Work and No Play is Not the Human Way
